What do the error beeps and red light on my scanner mean?

Explore preventive maintenance

Preventive battery replacement, Wi-Fi coverage audit and a general check of your scanners and mobile computers.

In brief. A scanner's beeps and lights are specific to each manufacturer, and often to each model: the same number of beeps does not mean the same thing from one brand to another. Note the number, length and tone of the beeps, the colour of the light and when they occur (at power-on, when scanning, on the base), then look for the matching row in the lookup table of your model's guide.

Error signals found in the documentation

These causes are taken from the manufacturers' guides; each example names the model concerned. The entry for your model, in the model-by-model table below, gives the exact procedure.

  1. Transmission errorFour long low beeps on the Zebra DS3600: the barcode is read, but the data is ignored.
  2. Scanner not linked to its baseThree beeps when scanning on the Honeywell Granit 1981i, 1991i and 2105i; a single beep confirms the link.
  3. Read failureRed scan light on the Honeywell CK65, red STATUS light (“NO READ”) on the Datalogic Matrix 120; on the Zebra FS10 and FS20 fixed-mount scanners, a decode failure produces no beep.
  4. Fixed-mount scanner errorTwo low tones with the Device Status light solid red: job error on the Zebra FS10, FS20, FS40 and FS70. On the Datalogic Matrix 120 and 220, the STATUS and READY lights flashing together indicate a diagnostic error.
  5. Hardware failureFour long beeps with a flashing light: ROM failure on the Datalogic PowerScan 9600; a long tone at start-up: failed self-test on the PowerScan 9500. The documentation then refers you to support.
  6. Low batteryRed flash every 2 seconds: battery below 10% on the Unitech MS852B.

What to check, in order

  1. Note the exact signalNumber, length and tone of the beeps, colour and rhythm of the light, when they occur.
  2. Find the row in the table for your modelEach guide on this site starts with a lookup table (signals or symptoms).
  3. Check the link and the batteryThese two cases come up in the tables of several cordless scanners.
  4. Contact support for a hardware failureFor a ROM failure or a failed self-test, the documentation does not provide any fix you can make yourself.

What the documentation recommends, model by model

For 14 models, the manufacturer's documentation describes this symptom. Each row links to the detailed entry in the guide, with the full procedure and its sources.

ModelGuide entryShort answer
Zebra DS3600Why does my Zebra DS3678 handheld scanner give four long low beeps after scanning?According to Zebra, four long low beeps indicate a transmission error: the barcode was read, but the data is ignored. Check the pairing with the cradle, the cables and the selected host interface.
Zebra DS3600Why does my Zebra DS3678 handheld scanner give a low beep followed by a high beep on a programming barcode?According to Zebra, this signal indicates an incorrect programming sequence or that the “Cancel” barcode has been scanned. Start the sequence again from the beginning, scanning the barcodes in the order given in the guide.
Zebra FS10Why does my Zebra FS10 scanner give two low beeps with a red light? In the Zebra signal table, two low tones with the Device Status light solid red correspond to a job error (“Job Error”). Open the scanner in Zebra Aurora Focus to check the job, then check its temperature: if it overheats, the FS10 may stop its jobs and must then be switched off and on again.
Zebra FS10Why is the Device Status light on my Zebra FS10 flashing red?According to the Zebra table, continuous red flashing at 2 Hz, with no beep, signals the start of a firmware update. Flashing at 5 Hz with a low tone signals that the update has failed: restart the scanner, then run the update again from Zebra Aurora Focus.
Zebra FS20Why does my Zebra FS20 fixed-mount scanner give two low beeps? Two low tones with the Device Status light solid red signal a job error (“Job Error”) in the Zebra table for the FS20. Check the job deployed in Zebra Aurora Focus and the scanner's status on the Web HMI dashboard, in particular its temperature.
Zebra FS20Why does my Zebra FS20 give a low beep with a red light flashing rapidly? In the Zebra table, a low tone and rapid red flashing (5 Hz) of the Device Status light indicate that a firmware update has failed. Restart the FS20, then run the update again from Aurora Focus or the Web HMI.
Zebra FS40 and FS70Why does my Zebra FS40 give two low beeps with the Warning light red?On the FS40 and FS70, two low tones with the Device Status and Warning lights solid red signal a job error, according to the Zebra table. Check the job in Zebra Aurora Focus, then the temperature and the power available: if it overheats, the scanner may stop its jobs.
Zebra FS40 and FS70Why is the light ring on my Zebra FS40 flashing red with a low beep?In the Zebra table, a low tone with the 360° light and the Device Status light flashing red at 5 Hz indicates that a firmware update has failed. Restart the scanner, then run the update again.
Datalogic PowerScan 9100Why does my Datalogic PowerScan 9100 handheld scanner emit six high beeps after each scan? The PBT9100 quick reference guide explains it: the barcode has been read, but no connection with the host has been established. Check the PD9130 cable, the PM9100's link with its base, or the PBT9100's link with its base or the Bluetooth host.
Datalogic PowerScan 9100Why does my Datalogic PowerScan 9100 handheld scanner emit a single very loud error beep? The PowerScan 9100 quick reference guides call this signal “ROM Failure”: an error in the scanner's software or programming. No user fix is offered: have the scanner checked.
Datalogic PowerScan 9500Why does my Datalogic PowerScan 9500 handheld scanner emit a long tone at power-up?According to Datalogic, a long tone at power-up means that the self-test has failed: the scanner enters Field Replaceable Unit (FRU) isolation mode. Press and then release the trigger to hear the code, write it down and contact the helpdesk.
Datalogic PowerScan 9500Why does my Datalogic PowerScan 9500 handheld scanner emit a very loud error beep? The PowerScan 9500 quick guides associate this signal with a ROM memory failure, that is, an error in the scanner's software or programming. They do not describe a fix: note the circumstances and contact Datalogic support.
Datalogic PowerScan 9600Why does my Datalogic PowerScan 9600 handheld scanner emit four long beeps?Datalogic associates four long beeps, with a flashing light, with a ROM failure (“ROM Failure”). The quick guides give no fix to carry out yourself: contact Datalogic support or your maintenance provider.
Datalogic PowerScan 9600Why does my Datalogic PowerScan 9600 handheld scanner emit six short high beeps?Datalogic calls this signal “Limited Scanning Label Read” (limited reading). The PowerScan 9600 quick guides specify neither its cause nor what to do: note the signal and the context (barcode read, interface used), then contact support.
Datalogic Matrix 120Why are the STATUS and READY lights on my Datalogic Matrix 120 flashing at the same time?According to Datalogic, this double flashing indicates a diagnostic error. Details of the error can be obtained from the Diagnostic page of the DL.CODE monitor, or by enabling the sending of diagnostic messages on the scanner's interfaces.
Datalogic Matrix 120Why does my Matrix 120 give a long low beep after the Setup or Learn function? The X-PRESS procedure failed and nothing was saved: the Setup calibration did not complete within about 5 seconds, or Learn did not complete within about 3 minutes. Present a single code, legible and correctly positioned, then run the function again.
Datalogic Matrix 220 and Matrix 220 XAIWhy are the STATUS and READY lights on my Datalogic Matrix 220 flashing together? This is how the Matrix 220 signals a diagnostic error. To find out which one, open the Diagnostic page of the DL.CODE monitor, or enable the sending of diagnostic messages on the interfaces: the host will then receive the details of the error.
Datalogic Matrix 220 and Matrix 220 XAIWhy does my Matrix 220 give a long low beep at the end of Automatic Setup? The automatic setup did not complete and the scanner exited without saving anything. Present a single code, sharp and stationary, at the distance saved by Aim mode, then run the function again.
Datalogic Matrix 320What do the colours of the 360° light ring on my Datalogic Matrix 320 mean?By default, the Matrix 320's 360° visual feedback lights up blue when the scanner is in configuration mode, green after a successful read and red after a failed read. These colours are configurable: if they do not match, check the scanner's settings.
Honeywell Granit 1980i and 1981iWhy does my Honeywell Granit 1981i scanner beep three times when I scan a barcode?According to Honeywell, three beeps when scanning a barcode indicate that the 1981i scanner is not linked to its base. Place it on the base, connected and powered, then scan a barcode again: a single beep confirms the link.
Honeywell Granit Ultra 2100i / 2105iWhy does my Honeywell 2105i scanner beep three times on every scan?According to the 2105i quick start guide, three beeps when scanning a barcode mean that the connection with the base is not established; a single beep indicates that it is. Connect the base to the mains and to the computer, then place the scanner in the base: it connects to it automatically.
Honeywell Granit Ultra 2100i / 2105iWhy does the light on my Honeywell 2105i scanner flash red after scanning? In normal operation, Honeywell associates the flashing red status light with a communication failure. Check that the scanner is connected to its base (one beep when scanning) and within range, and that the base is connected to the computer.
Honeywell Granit XP 1990i / 1991iWhy does my Honeywell 1991i scanner beep three times when I scan a barcode?According to the Honeywell quick start guide, three beeps when scanning mean that the link between the Granit XP 1991i and its base is not established. Check that the base is connected and powered on, then place the scanner in the base: a single beep on the next scan confirms the link.
Unitech MS852BWhy does the light on my Unitech MS852B handheld scanner flash red?According to the Unitech light table, red flashing every 2 seconds indicates a battery below 10%, and fast flashing a battery below 5% (the other lights are then disabled). Recharge the scanner. Red alternating every second for 5 seconds indicates a system warning or error.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my cordless handheld scanner beep three times?

On the Honeywell Granit 1981i, 1991i and 2105i, three beeps when scanning a barcode mean that the handheld scanner is not linked to its base: place it on the base, connected and powered, and a single beep at the next scan confirms the link. On the Unitech MS852B, three beeps at power-on indicate Batch mode.

Does a red light mean the scanner is faulty?

Not necessarily: depending on the model, it indicates a failed read, a low battery or, on fixed-mount scanners, a job error. The exact meaning depends on the model: check its lookup table.

What should I do after four long beeps on a Datalogic PowerScan 9600 scanner?

Datalogic associates four long beeps, with a flashing light, with a ROM failure. The quick guides give no fix you can make yourself: contact Datalogic support or your maintenance provider.
