Why does my scanner beep but nothing appears?

Explore preventive maintenance

Preventive battery replacement, Wi-Fi coverage audit and a general check of your scanners and mobile computers.

In brief. A good-read beep shows that the barcode has been decoded: if nothing appears in the application, it is the data that is not reaching it. Manufacturers cite an incorrectly programmed interface (keyboard emulation or virtual serial port), a broken link with the base or the host computer and, on mobile computers, keyboard input (wedge) that is disabled or an output mode that the application does not expect.

Why is the data not arriving? The causes cited by manufacturers

These causes are taken from the manufacturers' guides; each example names the model concerned. The entry for your model, in the model-by-model table below, gives the exact procedure.

  1. Interface programmed incorrectlyA Honeywell Granit 1920i programmed as “USB Serial” sends the data to a virtual serial port and not as keystrokes. On the Zebra FS10, HID keyboard emulation and CDC serial mode are mutually exclusive.
  2. Transmission error or broken linkOn the Zebra DS3600, four long low beeps indicate a barcode that has been read but data that has been ignored: pairing with the base, cables or host interface at fault.
  3. Keyboard input disabled on a mobile computerMobile computers send barcodes to the active application through simulated keyboard input (scan wedge on Honeywell, keyboard wedge on Datalogic): if it is disabled, or if the application controls the scanner itself, nothing reaches the field.
  4. Output mode expected by the applicationCipherLab states that Remote Desktop and terminal emulation only receive scans from the RK25 and RK95 in “Key Event” mode.
  5. Scanner in batch modeOn the Unitech MS852B, three beeps at power-on indicate Batch mode: scans are stored and are sent with the “Send Batch” barcode.

What to check, in order

  1. Place the cursor in an input fieldKeyboard emulation data arrives wherever the cursor is: test in a text editor.
  2. Check the programmed interfaceUSB keyboard emulation or virtual serial port: it must match what the application expects.
  3. Check the linkCable properly connected, cordless scanner paired with its base, base powered and connected to the host computer.
  4. On a mobile computer, check keyboard input (wedge)In the manufacturer's configuration application, as well as the output mode your application expects.

What the documentation recommends, model by model

For 35 models, the manufacturer's documentation describes this symptom. Each row links to the detailed entry in the guide, with the full procedure and its sources.

ModelGuide entryShort answer
Zebra DS3600Why does my Zebra DS3678 handheld scanner give four long low beeps after scanning?According to Zebra, four long low beeps indicate a transmission error: the barcode was read, but the data is ignored. Check the pairing with the cradle, the cables and the selected host interface.
Zebra DS3600Why does my Zebra DS3608 handheld scanner beep when scanning but nothing appears on the computer? The barcode is decoded correctly, but the link with the host computer is incorrectly set up. Zebra recommends scanning the appropriate host interface barcode, checking that all cables are properly connected and, on a DS3678, pairing it with the cradle again.
Zebra FS10Why does my Zebra FS10 read the barcode but send nothing to the PC?Check the USB output mode: according to the Zebra guide, enabling the HID keyboard disables CDC serial mode, and vice versa. If you use the virtual serial port (CDC), also enable the sending of results (“Enable CDC Serial Results”), then restart the scanner.
Zebra FS10Why does my Zebra FS10 no longer work properly behind a USB hub?According to the Aurora Focus help, the USB interfaces of the FS10 (RNDIS and HID keyboard) can freeze with some USB hubs when the HID keyboard re-enumerates. Unplug the USB cable, then plug it back in.
Zebra FS20Why does my Zebra FS20 not send its results over TCP/IP or RS-232?Enable result output on the interface used: “TCP Result Output” (parameter no. 66930) or “RS232 Result Output” (no. 66931) barcodes in the Zebra guide, or the “Enable TCP/IP Results” option in Aurora Focus. Then check the port, the connection type (server or client) and the serial wiring.
Zebra FS20Why does my Zebra FS20 lose results when the throughput increases? The “Result Overflow” counter in the Web HMI shows the results that could not be sent, when the data exceeds the rate of the output interface. Zebra advises a faster interface, less output data or a lower inspection rate.
Zebra FS40 and FS70Why does my Zebra FS70 not transmit its results to the PLC or server?Enable result output on the interface used: “TCP Result Output” (no. 66930) or “RS232 Result Output” (no. 66931) barcodes in the Zebra guide, the “Enable TCP/IP Results” option in Aurora Focus, or “Enable CDC Serial Results” (no. 66933) over USB. Then check the “Result Overflow” counter in the Web HMI.
Zebra MC3200 (MC32N0)Why do barcodes scanned by my Zebra MC3200 mobile computer not appear in my application? On Android, DataWedge applies a profile to each application. If your application has no profile and the generic Profile0 is disabled, it receives nothing: create a profile for that application, with Barcode Input and Keystroke output enabled.
Zebra MC3300Why does my Zebra MC3300 mobile computer read barcodes but the data never reaches my software? The beam can come on with the default profile Profile0 without DataWedge knowing which application to send the data to. Zebra recommends associating a DataWedge profile with your software, with Keystroke or Intent output.
Zebra MC3300axWhy does my Zebra MC3300ax mobile computer not send scanned barcodes to my application? If scanning works in the DataWedge demo app but not in yours, Zebra explains that a DataWedge profile associated with your application, with a suitable output, is missing. Without this profile, Profile0 applies, without knowing where to send the data.
Zebra MC3300xWhy does my Zebra MC3300x mobile computer read the barcode without sending anything to my application?According to Zebra's DataWedge FAQ, the beam comes on thanks to the default profile Profile0, but this profile does not know where to send the data for your application. Create a DataWedge profile associated with the application, with keystroke or Intent output.
Zebra MC3400 / MC3450Why do barcodes scanned by my Zebra MC3400 mobile computer not reach my application?According to Zebra's DataWedge FAQ, either no profile is associated with your application, or its input or output is misconfigured. Create a DataWedge profile for the application, with the Barcode input enabled and a Keystroke or Intent output.
Zebra MC9300Why does my application not receive the barcodes scanned by my Zebra MC9300 mobile computer? If scanning works in DWDemo but not in your application, no DataWedge profile is sending the data to it. Associate a profile with the application, with the Barcode input and a Keystroke or Intent output, or configure Profile0.
Zebra MC9400 / MC9450Why do the barcodes scanned by my Zebra MC9400 mobile computer not reach my application?According to Zebra, no DataWedge profile is associated with your application, or its input or output is incorrectly configured. Create a profile for the application, with the Barcode input and a Keystroke or Intent output, or configure the default profile, Profile0.
Zebra TC22RWhy do the scans from my Zebra TC22R mobile computer not arrive in my app?On the TC22R, it is DataWedge that sends scanned data to the app as keystrokes. Check in the DataWedge app, Settings menu, that the “DataWedge enabled” box is ticked.
Datalogic PowerScan 9100Why does my Datalogic PowerScan 9100 handheld scanner emit six high beeps after each scan? The PBT9100 quick reference guide explains it: the barcode has been read, but no connection with the host has been established. Check the PD9130 cable, the PM9100's link with its base, or the PBT9100's link with its base or the Bluetooth host.
Datalogic PowerScan 9100Why does my Datalogic PowerScan PD9130 handheld scanner not transmit anything to my software? The PD9130 is multi-interface: scan the label for the interface that matches the connection (RS-232, USB or keyboard wedge). For USB-COM, which emulates an RS-232 port, first install the USB Com driver downloaded from datalogic.com.
Datalogic PowerScan 9500Why does my Datalogic PowerScan 9500 handheld scanner emit six high beeps after reading?According to Datalogic, this “limited reading” signal means that the connection with the host is not established: the code is read but cannot be sent. Check the cable or the link with the base, then the programmed interface.
Datalogic PowerScan 9500Why does the BC9180 Ethernet base of my PowerScan 9500 not communicate on the network?According to the BC9xx0-STAR base quick guide, the Ethernet base can be set to Standard or EtherNet/IP mode, with a static address (192.168.187.31 by default) or a dynamic one (DHCP), which requires a DHCP server on the network. It cannot be powered by the host: connect its external power supply.
Datalogic PowerScan 9600Why does my Datalogic PowerScan 9600 handheld scanner emit six short high beeps?Datalogic calls this signal “Limited Scanning Label Read” (limited reading). The PowerScan 9600 quick guides specify neither its cause nor what to do: note the signal and the context (barcode read, interface used), then contact support.
Datalogic PowerScan 9600Why does my Datalogic PowerScan 9600 handheld scanner beep without anything reaching the computer?Datalogic states that a barcode that is decoded but not transmitted comes from a scanner programmed for the wrong host type. Scan the interface barcode that matches your connection (USB keyboard, USB-COM, RS-232, Ethernet…).
Datalogic Matrix 120Why doesn't my Matrix 120 send anything even though one of the expected codes has been read?By default, when several codes are expected, DL.CODE combines them with a logical AND: all must be decoded to obtain a good read. If a single code is enough, group them in the same XOR (exclusive OR) box in Good Read Setup.
Datalogic Matrix 120Why doesn't my Matrix 120 USB appear in DL.CODE?The Matrix 120 USB needs the “Matrix USB Driver”, which must be ticked when installing DL.CODE; restarting the PC is then recommended. Click Getting Started: the scanner appears in Online Devices, not in the list of serial devices.
Datalogic Matrix 220 and Matrix 220 XAIWhy doesn't my Matrix 220 validate the read when only one of the codes is present? With several codes expected, the default rule in DL.CODE is a logical AND: a good read requires all of them to be decoded. For a single code to be enough, combine them with an exclusive OR (XOR) in the Good Read configuration.
Datalogic Matrix 320How can my Matrix 320 send scanned codes to PC software like a keyboard? The Matrix 320 has no native USB output. Datalogic offers two converter cables for USB keyboard emulation: an Ethernet to USB HID keyboard converter (93A050146) and an RS232 serial to HID keyboard converter (93ACC0268).
Datalogic Matrix 320Why doesn't my Matrix 320 send anything on its serial connection? The Matrix 320's main serial port is set by software to RS232 or RS422 Full Duplex, from 2,400 to 115,200 bit/s; it uses pins 10 to 12 and 17 of the 17-pin M12 connector. Check the interface type and the baud rate, and do not leave the RX lines floating.
Datalogic Falcon X60 / X65Why does my Datalogic Falcon X60 beep when scanning but nothing appears in the application? The barcode is read but not sent to the application. In Datalogic Settings > Scanner & Decoder > Wedge, check that Enable keyboard wedge is enabled; if Keyboard wedge only on focus is enabled, tap the input field first. If your application receives barcodes by intent, it is the Intent Wedge settings that need checking.
Datalogic Memor X3Why do the barcodes read by my Datalogic Memor X3 not appear in my application? The barcode is decoded but is not sent as keyboard input. Tap the Decoding icon: the last item in the drop-down menu, Wedge, enables keyboard emulation.
Datalogic Skorpio X3Why do the barcodes scanned by my Datalogic Skorpio X3 not appear in my application? The green light confirms that the barcode has been decoded: it is the sending of the data that fails. In the Decoding applet, Devices page, check that the scanner's keyboard emulation (keyboard wedge) is enabled.
Datalogic Skorpio X4Why do the barcodes scanned by my Datalogic Skorpio X4 not appear in my application? The barcode is decoded but not transmitted: check keyboard emulation (wedge). On Android, Settings > Scanner Settings > Wedge: enable Keyboard wedge to write into the active field, or Intent wedge if the application expects intents; on Windows, enable the keyboard wedge in the Decoding applet.
Datalogic Skorpio X40/X45Why do the codes scanned by my Skorpio X40 not arrive in the input field? The Skorpio X40/X45 sends scans as keystrokes, via Keyboard Wedge (enabled by default), to the app in the foreground. Check in Datalogic Settings > Scanner & Decoder > Wedge that “Enable keyboard wedge” is turned on and place the cursor in the field before scanning.
Datalogic Skorpio X5Why do the codes scanned by my Skorpio X5 not arrive in my app?The Skorpio X5 sends scanned data via “Wedge”. Check in Scanner Settings > Wedge that “Enable Keyboard Wedge” is turned on and that an input field has the focus; if your app expects Android intents, turn on “Enable Intent Wedge”.
Honeywell Granit 1920iWhy do the barcodes scanned by my Granit 1920i not appear in my file or spreadsheet? For barcodes to arrive as keystrokes, the scanner must be programmed as “USB PC Keyboard”. In “USB Serial”, it emulates a COM port and the data goes to this virtual serial port.
Honeywell Granit 1920iWhy is my Granit 1920i in USB Serial mode not recognised as a COM port in Windows? In “USB Serial” mode, the scanner emulates a COM port. On Windows, you need to download the driver from the Honeywell website; the driver takes the next available COM port number. On a Mac, no driver is needed.
Honeywell Granit 1980i and 1981iHow do I connect my Granit 1981i base to the computer?Turn off the computer, connect the base via USB, keyboard emulation (keyboard wedge) or an RS232 serial port, then turn the computer back on. If a power supply is needed, it is ordered separately.
Honeywell Granit 1980i and 1981iHow do I attach the cable to my Granit 1980i scanner? With the computer off, push the cable into the scanner, slide the locking plate over the connector base and tighten the screw. Connect the other end via USB or to an RS232 serial port, then turn the computer back on.
Honeywell Granit Ultra 2100i / 2105iWhy does the light on my Honeywell 2105i scanner flash red after scanning? In normal operation, Honeywell associates the flashing red status light with a communication failure. Check that the scanner is connected to its base (one beep when scanning) and within range, and that the base is connected to the computer.
Honeywell Granit Ultra 2100i / 2105iWhy does my Honeywell Granit Ultra scanner not type anything into my software?Check the interface: in “USB Serial”, the data goes to a COM port, not to the cursor; for keyboard input, scan “USB PC Keyboard”. On a 2105i, three beeps or a flashing red light signal a connection problem with the base.
Honeywell Granit XP 1990i / 1991iWhy does my Honeywell Granit XP scanner send nothing to the computer?Check the interface first: in “USB Serial”, the data goes to a COM port and does not appear in a word processor; for keyboard input, scan “USB PC Keyboard”. On a 1991i, three beeps when scanning signal no link with the base.
Honeywell Granit XP 1990i / 1991iWhy does my Honeywell Granit XP scanner not appear as a COM port in Windows? In “USB Serial” mode, the Granit XP emulates an RS-232 COM port. In Windows, you need to install the driver downloaded from the Honeywell website; a Mac uses a built-in class driver.
Honeywell HF800Why does my Honeywell HF800 fixed-mount scanner not communicate via Ethernet?Check the physical connection first: the HF800 connects to Ethernet via an M12 connector, with a 2 or 5 m M12 to RJ45 cable. Then check in DataMax that the Ethernet interface is the one configured.
Honeywell HF800Why does my Honeywell HF800 fixed-mount scanner not transmit anything via RS-232 or RS-485?Check that the cable matches the interface: Honeywell offers separate cables for RS-232 and RS-485, as well as a flying leads cable. Then check in DataMax that the chosen serial interface is active.
Honeywell CK65Why do the barcodes scanned by my Honeywell CK65 not reach my application? The CK65 sends scanned data to the active application as keystrokes: this is the scan wedge, enabled by default. Place the cursor in the required field, and check that the wedge is active in the application's profile and that the application does not control the scanner itself.
Honeywell CK65Why does my Honeywell CK65 open the browser when I scan a barcode? The “Launch Browser” setting, enabled by default, opens barcodes that begin with http:// or https:// in the browser. “Scan to intent” and “Launch EZ Config”, also enabled, can launch an application or EZConfig depending on the barcode format.
Honeywell ScanPal EDA61KWhy do the barcodes scanned by my Honeywell EDA61K mobile computer not arrive in my application?Check that the Scan Wedge is enabled (Wedge, enabled by default) in the Data Processing Settings of the scan profile. If the application uses the BarcodeReader API, the wedge is suspended as long as the application has control of the scanner.
Unitech MS852BWhy does my Unitech MS852B handheld scanner beep three times at power-on?The number of beeps at power-on indicates the operating mode: 1 beep for Auto, 2 beeps for Wedge, 3 beeps for Batch. Three beeps therefore mean that the scanner is in Batch mode: scans are stored in a batch file, which is sent with the “Send Batch” barcode.
Unitech MS852BWhy does my Unitech MS852B handheld scanner send nothing to the computer?First check the lights: the scanner and the base must be solid blue. A base showing solid red is powered but cannot see the host: check the cable and the interface selector (USB HID on the left by default). If the scanner emits 3 beeps at power-on, it is in Batch mode and stores the scans.
CipherLab RK25Why do barcodes read by my CipherLab RK25 mobile computer not appear in terminal emulation?Set the ReaderConfig “Keyboard Emulation” setting to “Key Event”. According to CipherLab, Remote Desktop and terminal emulation receive nothing until this mode is selected.
CipherLab RK26Why do the barcodes scanned by my CipherLab RK26 mobile computer not reach my application? It all depends on the “Keyboard Emulation” mode in ReaderConfig. By default, “Input Method” enters the barcode as text in the active field; a business application may expect “Key Event” or an “Intent” broadcast. Ask the software publisher which mode it expects.
CipherLab RK95Why does my terminal emulator not receive the barcodes scanned by my CipherLab RK95?Terminal emulation (TE) and Remote Desktop (RDC) only accept RK95 scans in “Key Event” mode. In ReaderConfig, set “Keyboard Emulation” to “Key Event” instead of the default “Input Method” mode.

Frequently asked questions

My handheld scanner beeps but does not type anything: is it faulty?

Not necessarily: the beep shows that the barcode is read. First check that the programmed interface matches the application (virtual serial port instead of keyboard emulation, for example) and that the link with the base is not broken, before having the scanner repaired.

Why are the barcodes scanned by my mobile computer not reaching my business application?

Simulated keyboard input (wedge) may be disabled, or the application expects a different output mode. Check the scanning profile in the manufacturer's configuration application and ask the application's developer which mode it expects.

What do four long beeps mean on a Zebra DS3600 scanner?

On the Zebra DS3600, four long low beeps indicate a transmission error: the barcode has been read, but the data is ignored. Check the pairing with the base, the cables and the host interface. Each manufacturer has its own signals: check the table for your model.
