Red, blue or yellow light on a Unitech HT730: what does it mean?
These entries explain the mobile computer's lights that are not directly related to scanning: battery level and keypad modes.
Why is the light on my Unitech HT730 mobile computer flashing red?
Light: flashing red (both lights together, or alternately).
Short answer: According to Unitech, there are two possible cases. If both red lights flash together at power-on, the battery is below 15%: put the mobile computer on charge. If they flash alternately while the charger is connected, the battery is missing or incorrectly installed.
Likely cause
The light table in the HT730 manual (§ 1.4.5, “Checking the LED Status”) and in the quick start guide distinguishes between both red lights flashing simultaneously at power-on (battery below 15%) and alternate flashing with the charger connected (battery not installed or incorrectly positioned). The HT730 Plus manual gives the same information.
Caution: Unitech states that the battery is removed by hand: do not use tools, do not open it and do not disassemble it. Use only genuine Unitech batteries: replacing it with an incorrect type creates a risk of explosion.
What to do
- Simultaneous flashing at power-on: connect the mobile computer to its USB-C cable and mains adapter, or place it in its cradle. The light turns solid red while charging, then solid green when the battery is full.
- Alternate flashing, charger connected: unlock the latch, remove the battery and refit it, aligning its contacts with those in the compartment.
- HT730: insert the cover at about 45°, press down on it, then slide the latch into the locked position. HT730 Plus: insert the battery from the bottom and press firmly.
- Check that the cover is properly closed, then reconnect the charger: the light should turn solid red.
- The quick start guide says to keep the connectors free of dust, grease, mud and water: a dirty connector can prevent communication or cause a short circuit.

Why does the light on my Unitech HT730 mobile computer stay on in blue or yellow?
Light: solid blue or solid yellow, with an icon in the status bar.
Short answer: The keypad is in an input mode. According to Unitech, the blue key switches to function mode (solid blue light) and the yellow key to alpha mode (solid yellow light); pressing the same key returns to numeric mode. The blue light also indicates a message notification.
Likely cause
The keypad definition (HT730 manual, § 1.5; HT730 Plus manual, § 1.3) states that the blue key toggles between numeric and function modes, and the yellow key between numeric and alpha modes. The active mode is shown by an icon in the status bar and by the light. The light table also associates blue with messages.
What to do
- Look at the status bar icon to see which mode is active.
- Solid blue light: press the blue key again to return to the numeric keypad. In function mode, P1 gives F11 and P2 gives F12; on the HT730 Plus, keys 1 to 0 give F1 to F10.
- Solid yellow light: press the yellow key again to return to the numeric keypad. In alpha mode, keys 2 to 9 enter letters (abc to wxyz).
- If no mode key is active, open the notification panel: Unitech associates the blue light with messages.

Scanning goes through the USS service (Unitech Scan Service): these entries explain how to test and configure it.
Why won't my Unitech HT730 mobile computer read barcodes?
Symptoms: no green light and no data when the trigger is pressed.
Short answer: Test the scanner in the USS (Unitech Scan Service) app: start a scan and aim at the barcode. If Picklist mode is active, only the barcode aligned with the aimer is decoded. As a last resort, restore the USS factory settings from its “Factory Default” menu.
Likely cause
The HT730 manual (§ 2.1 and § 3.1) presents USS as the mobile computer's scanning service: it is used to test scanning, to set the multi-decode and Picklist modes, and to return to factory settings. A good read turns on the green light.
Caution: The scanner is a Class 2 laser product. Unitech warns that using controls, adjustments or procedures other than those in the manual may result in hazardous laser radiation exposure, and that optical instruments (binoculars, magnifiers) increase the risk to the eyes.
What to do
- Open USS:
Settings > USS (Unitech scan service)on the HT730,Settings > Enterprise Features > USSon the HT730 Plus, or tap USS in the notification bar. - Start a scan with one of the methods provided: side triggers, Scan key on the keypad or the app's scan button (
Start Scanon the HT730). - Aim the scanner window at the barcode: the data should appear on the display and the light should turn green.
- In the USS menu, open
Scanner Settingsand checkPicklist Mode: when enabled, it only decodes the barcode aligned with the laser crosshair or aiming dot. - If the triggers or the Scan key no longer do anything, check that they have not been remapped in KeyRemap (see the KeyRemap entry).
- To start again from the scanner's factory settings, open the USS menu and choose
Factory Default. You can save your settings first withSave / Load Settings.
The manual refers to the USS manual for details of the settings (symbologies, terminator, trigger modes).

How do I turn off the scanner illumination on my Unitech HT730 mobile computer?
Setting: Trigger Modes > Aim only.
Short answer: In USS, open Scanner settings, then Trigger Modes, and choose “Aim only”: according to the Unitech FAQ, the scanner illumination is then turned off. The illumination brightness, however, can only be adjusted on certain scan engines.
Likely cause
The HT730 FAQ states that brightness adjustment depends on the scan engine's PSoC component: it is possible on the N3603, N4603 and N5703 (HS7) engines, not on the N6603 and N6703.
What to do
- Open
Settings > USS > Scanner settings > Trigger Modes. - Select
Aim only: only the aimer remains active. - For brightness: adjustable on the N3603, N4603 and N5703 (HS7) engines; not adjustable on the N6603 and N6703.

How do I remove asterisks from barcodes scanned by my Unitech HT730 mobile computer?
File: rule.txt.
Short answer: Use a rule.txt file: the Unitech HT730 FAQ gives a two-line rule that removes asterisks from scanned data. The scanning service reads this file at start-up and applies it to the data sent.
Likely cause
The HT730 FAQ provides the rule. The Unitech Android programming manual explains that the rule.txt file, placed in the /sdcard/ folder, is read at start-up by the scanning service and applies to data transmitted via Scan2Key as well as via intent.
Caution: According to the programming manual, if no rule matches a scanned barcode, nothing is transmitted. Add a general rule with no modification if other barcodes must pass through unchanged.
What to do
- Create a text file named
rule.txt. - Enter the two lines from the HT730 FAQ:
q,1,t,0,0(qualification line) thenm,1,r,\*,(replacement line). - Copy the file to the mobile computer's
/sdcard/folder. - The scanning service reads the file when it starts: restart the mobile computer to apply the rule.
- To stop the data being modified, delete the file.
Copy the two lines from the Unitech FAQ to avoid any character errors.
