Request a repair Printable versionPDF · 732 KB

Phone support, repair and express exchange by TIMCOD technicians. The request form is in French.

In brief. The Zebra ZD410 is a direct thermal desktop label printer (no ribbon), in 203 or 300 dpi, with Ethernet, serial, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth options, a cutter, a peeler and a battery base. It has no display: it reports its alerts through five lights. According to Zebra, the most common incidents come from a cover that is not properly closed, media that has run out or is not detected correctly (sensor badly positioned or dirty, calibration to be redone) and a dirty printhead. This guide covers the alerts in the Zebra user guide, the SmartCal and manual calibration procedures, cleaning and reset. Click a question to open its entry.

  • A light is red or orange (STATUS, SUPPLIES, NETWORK…): find the state of the lights in the signal table and open the matching entry.
  • No error light, but the print is poor: skipped labels, see calibration; faded print or blank labels, see print quality; roll slipping, see loading labels.
  • The problem keeps coming back: the preventive maintenance section explains how it reduces this type of fault.

The light states come from the “Commandes de l'opérateur” (operator controls) section and the battery indicators of the French ZD410 user guide (P1130712-01FR); the alerts and their causes come from the “Resolve Alerts and Errors” and “Resolve Miscellaneous Issues” pages of the Zebra guide. The orange colour in the guide corresponds to the yellow dot. A dash means that the documentation consulted does not specify the state of the lights.

Zebra ZD410 alerts: causes and solutions

The Zebra guide documents seven alerts, grouped here: head open, media out, head temperatures and memory; the cutter error (Cut Error) is in the cutter section. For each one: the short answer, the cause, the steps to follow and, where the guide provides for it, the point at which to hand over to a technician.

Why does my Zebra ZD410 report “Printhead Open” (red STATUS light) when the cover seems to be closed?

Alert: Printhead Open · Lights: STATUS solid red.

Short answer: The cover, which carries the printhead, is not fully latched. Press both front corners of the cover until you hear and feel the latches engage; if the alert persists, Zebra states that the head-open switch must be checked by a technician.

Likely cause

According to Zebra, the alert appears when a print command arrives or FEED is pressed while the cover is not closed. Second cause cited: the head-open switch needs servicing.

What to do

  1. Press the top front corners of the cover until you hear and feel the latches click.
  2. Then check that the STATUS light has returned to solid green (printer ready).
  3. If the light stays red even though the cover is properly closed, the head-open switch is at fault.

When to call a technician: if the alert persists with the cover closed, Zebra asks you to call in a technician for the head-open switch.

Why does my Zebra ZD410 show “Media Out” (red STATUS and SUPPLIES lights) when a roll is loaded?

Alert: Media Out · Lights: STATUS solid red, SUPPLIES solid red.

Short answer: The printer does not detect any media in the media path. Check the loading and the position of the movable sensor, clean the sensors, then run a SmartCal calibration again. After reloading, press FEED once, or press PAUSE to resume an interrupted job.

Likely cause

Zebra lists six causes: empty roll; a label missing from the liner, which can serve as an end-of-roll marker; movable sensor misaligned; printer set for non-continuous media (gap or black mark labels) while continuous media is loaded; dirty sensors; detection fault due to corrupted memory or a failed component.

Caution: Do not switch the power off to reload media while a print job is in progress: you would lose it.

What to do

  1. Load a roll and close the cover. Press FEED once, or press PAUSE to resume the current job.
  2. If the roll has run out or a label is missing, replace the roll without turning the printer off, so that you do not lose the current job.
  3. Check the position of the movable sensor (see loading labels), then run a SmartCal calibration again.
  4. With continuous media, move the movable sensor back to its default centre position, then recalibrate if necessary.
  5. Clean the upper sensor (gap/web) and the movable sensor (see cleaning the sensors), reload the media, adjust the movable sensor and recalibrate.
  6. If the detection fault persists, reload the printer firmware.

When to call a technician: if the media is still not detected after reloading the firmware, Zebra advises calling a technician.

For the solid red STATUS light, the French guide also mentions an error during media detection.

Why does my Zebra ZD410 pause and report printhead overheating (“Printhead over temperature”)?

Alert: Printhead over temperature · Lights: STATUS solid orange.

Short answer: The printhead has overheated, often during a large batch of labels. The printer stops while the head cools down, then resumes printing on its own. If the heat comes from the room (direct sunlight), move the printer or cool the room.

Likely cause

According to Zebra, the printer pauses to let the head cool down, which often happens when printing large batches. An ambient temperature that is too high, for example in the sun, can also be the cause.

Caution: The printhead gets hot during printing: do not touch it.

What to do

  1. Leave the printer paused: printing resumes automatically once the head has cooled down.
  2. If the room is too hot or the printer is in the sun, move it to a cooler place or cool the room.

What should I do when my Zebra ZD410 reports that the printhead is too cold (flashing orange STATUS light)?

Alert: Printhead below operating temperature · Lights: STATUS flashing orange.

Short answer: The room temperature is too low for the printhead. Move the printer to a warmer place and let it warm up gradually, to avoid condensation.

Likely cause

Zebra states that the ambient temperature is below the operating temperature of the printhead.

What to do

  1. Install the printer in a warmer room.
  2. Let it warm up slowly before printing again: warming up too quickly can cause condensation.

Why are the STATUS and PAUSE lights on my Zebra ZD410 flashing red?

Alert: critical head temperature or power failure · Lights: STATUS and PAUSE flashing red (head overheating).

Short answer: The Zebra guide associates this red flashing with head overheating: let the head cool down, then restart the printer. Turn it off, wait five seconds for it to shut down completely, then turn it back on; if the error persists, call in a technician.

Likely cause

According to Zebra, the printhead has reached a critical temperature, or a power failure has occurred.

Caution: Do not touch the printhead while it is hot.

What to do

  1. Let the printhead cool down.
  2. Turn the printer off and wait five seconds for it to shut down completely.
  3. Turn the printer back on and check that the STATUS light returns to solid green.

When to call a technician: if the error reappears after restarting, Zebra asks you to call a technician.

The Zebra troubleshooting page does not specify the lights for this alert; the link with the red flashing of STATUS and PAUSE comes from the “Commandes de l'opérateur” (operator controls) section of the French guide, which says to wait for the head to cool down and then restart.

What does the head thermistor error (“Printhead thermistor failure”) mean on my Zebra ZD410?

Alert: Printhead thermistor failure · Lights: — (not specified on the page consulted).

Short answer: The sensor that measures the head temperature (thermistor) has failed. Turn the printer off, wait five seconds, then turn it back on; if the error returns, Zebra asks for a technician to intervene.

Likely cause

Printhead thermistor failure, according to the Zebra guide.

What to do

  1. Turn the printer off and wait five seconds, until it has shut down completely.
  2. Switch the printer back on.

When to call a technician: if the error persists after restarting, the head thermistor must be checked by a technician.

Why does my Zebra ZD410 not save my formats, graphics or fonts (DATA light flashing orange)?

Lights: STATUS solid orange; DATA flashing orange (insufficient memory).

Short answer: The printer cannot store the data in the requested memory location. Free up space: reduce the format or the print area, delete unused graphics, fonts and formats, and check that the data is not being sent to a device that is not present.

Likely cause

According to Zebra, the printer cannot save the data (formats, graphics, fonts…) to the specified memory location.

What to do

  1. Reduce the size of the label format or the print area.
  2. Delete graphics, fonts and formats that are no longer used from the memory.
  3. Check that the data is not being directed to a storage device that is not installed or not available.

Calibration problems: my Zebra ZD410 skips labels or does not detect them

The ZD410 calibrates using SmartCal (two buttons) or, for difficult media, through a manual calibration in advanced mode. The sensor profile lets you check gap detection.

How do I calibrate a Zebra ZD410 (SmartCal calibration)?

Symptoms: skipped labels, misaligned printing, new type or new batch of labels.

Short answer: With the printer on and ready (STATUS light solid green), hold down PAUSE and CANCEL for two seconds, then release. The ZD410 feeds a few labels and adjusts its detection thresholds, then the STATUS light returns to solid green.

Likely cause

Zebra recommends calibrating when the media type, size or batch changes. With an identical roll (same format, same supplier, same batch), pressing FEED once or twice is enough to resynchronise the labels.

Official SmartCal calibration procedure

  1. Check that the media is properly loaded and that the cover is closed.
  2. Press POWER to turn the printer on.
  3. When the STATUS light is solid green, hold down PAUSE and CANCEL together for two seconds, then release.
  4. The printer measures a few labels and sets its media detection levels.
  5. When it has finished, the STATUS light returns to solid green.

If SmartCal does not recognise the media correctly, Zebra suggests manual calibration. After a factory reset, the guide also asks you to recalibrate.

Sources: SmartCal media calibration (opens in a new window) – ZD410 Desktop Printer – User Guide, French edition (P1130712-01FR) · Manually Calibrating Media (opens in a new window) – ZD410 Desktop Printer User Guide · Resetting Non-Network Printer Configuration Settings to their Factory Defaults (opens in a new window) – ZD410 Desktop Printer User Guide (official documentation).

How do I run a manual media calibration on a Zebra ZD410 when SmartCal fails?

Symptoms: SmartCal does not recognise the media, labels still skipped.

Short answer: Enter advanced mode (hold PAUSE for two seconds), then start the manual calibration with PAUSE. The printer first measures the bare liner, then several labels; if it does not return to the ready state, start again, moving the movable sensor.

Likely cause

Zebra reserves this mode for media that SmartCal calibration does not recognise correctly.

Official manual calibration procedure

  1. With media loaded and the printer on, hold down PAUSE for two seconds: all the lights flash orange, then STATUS stays solid orange (manual calibration mode selected).
  2. Press PAUSE while STATUS is orange: the SUPPLIES light flashes, then the PAUSE light flashes.
  3. Open the printer and check that the movable sensor is in the centre position (gap detection). For black mark or notched media, place it where it detects the mark; for pre-printed media, where it comes into contact with the printing as little as possible.
  4. Peel about 80 mm of labels off the liner and place the bare section over the platen roller, with the leading edge of the first label under the guides.
  5. Close the printer and press PAUSE once: the media light flashes while the liner is measured, then PAUSE flashes.
  6. Open the printer, place a label just above the movable sensor, then close it again.
  7. Press PAUSE once: the printer feeds and measures several labels. If it identifies the media type (gap, black mark or notch) and its length, it returns to the ready state.
  8. If not, repeat the procedure, moving the movable sensor on each attempt.

In advanced mode, FEED cycles through the modes (manual calibration, print width, darkness) and CANCEL lets you exit.

Why does my Zebra ZD410 treat my labels as a continuous roll?

Symptoms: printing no longer lines up with the labels, as if on continuous paper.

Short answer: The printer is not calibrated for the loaded media, or it is set for continuous media. Set the correct media type (gap/notch, continuous or mark), then run a SmartCal calibration, or a manual calibration for difficult media.

Likely cause

According to Zebra, the printer is not calibrated for the media in use, or it is configured for continuous media.

What to do

  1. Set the printer to the media type actually loaded: gap/notch, continuous or mark.
  2. Run a SmartCal calibration.
  3. If the media is still not recognised correctly, move on to manual calibration.

Source: Resolve Miscellaneous Issues (opens in a new window) – ZD410 Desktop Printer User Guide (official documentation).

How do I check that my Zebra ZD410 correctly detects the gap between labels (sensor profile)?

Symptoms: gaps not detected correctly, pre-printed areas taken for gaps.

Short answer: Print a sensor profile: turn the printer off, then turn it back on while holding FEED and CANCEL until only the STATUS light stays on. On the graph, the peaks should be spaced like the gaps between labels; if not, recalibrate manually.

Likely cause

Zebra recommends this diagnostic when the printer does not locate the gaps correctly or mistakes a pre-printed area for a gap.

Official procedure

  1. Switch the printer off.
  2. Turn it back on while holding down FEED and CANCEL.
  3. Release when only the STATUS light stays on: the profile prints, usually over several labels.
  4. Read the graph: the MEDIA line gives the sensor readings, the WEB line the gap detection threshold, the OUT line the media-out threshold. The upward peaks correspond to the gaps, the lines between the peaks to the labels.
  5. Compare the distance between two peaks with the length of a label. If they do not match, run a manual calibration.

The profile can also be started with the ZPL command ~JG. The readings are expressed in dots from the start of printing.

Loading labels on the Zebra ZD410: roll, sensors and platen roller

The ZD410 prints without a ribbon: feed problems come from how the roll is loaded, the position of the movable sensor, dirty sensors or a slipping platen roller.

How do I load a roll of labels and adjust the movable sensor on a Zebra ZD410?

Symptoms: roll not feeding properly, labels not detected correctly after changing the roll.

Short answer: Open the printer, place the roll between the roll holders with the printable side facing up, pass the media under both guides and bring it out at the front. Place the movable sensor in the centre for gap labels or continuous media, and on the mark for black mark media.

Likely cause

According to Zebra, the ZD410 detects media in two ways: a central transmissive sensor for gap labels and continuous media, and a movable reflective sensor for black marks, notches or holes. The movable sensor provides only one type of detection at a time.

Official loading procedure

  1. Remove the outer layer of the roll: it may carry dirt that would be deposited on the head.
  2. Pull the release levers towards you and open the cover.
  3. Pull the roll holders apart, place the roll so that the printable side faces up as it passes over the platen roller, release the holders and check that the roll turns freely.
  4. Pull the media until it extends past the front of the printer, then slide it under both guides.
  5. Adjust the movable sensor: default centre position for continuous media or labels without a black mark; for a black mark or a notch, alignment arrow in the middle of the mark, as far as possible from the edge, with the sensor window fully covered.
  6. If the printer has a cutter, feed the media through the cutter slot and bring it out at the front.
  7. Close the cover until it clicks. For new media, run a SmartCal calibration; for an identical roll (same format, supplier and batch), pressing FEED once is enough.

Zebra points out that the media can shift by about 1 mm during printing and that side notches get damaged by handling: this is why the sensor must be placed away from the edge of the mark.

Source: Loading the media and adjusting the movable sensor (opens in a new window) – ZD410 Desktop Printer – User Guide, French edition (P1130712-01FR) (official documentation).

Why does my Zebra ZD410 skip labels or print out of position?

Symptoms: variable start position, labels of distorted size, image straddling two labels.

Short answer: Zebra calls this a registration fault: media incorrectly loaded, movable sensor badly positioned or sensors not calibrated for this media. Check the loading and the sensor, run a SmartCal calibration, then a manual calibration if the problem persists.

Likely cause

Four causes cited by Zebra: media incorrectly loaded or movable sensor badly adjusted; sensors not calibrated for the length, properties or detection mode of the media (gap/notch, continuous, mark); platen roller slipping or damaged; cable or communication settings problem.

What to do

  1. Check the loading and the position of the movable sensor according to the media type (see loading labels).
  2. Run a SmartCal calibration.
  3. If labels are still being skipped, run a manual calibration.
  4. Clean or replace the platen roller if it is slipping (see platen roller).
  5. If nothing changes, check the link with the computer (see communication problems).

Source: Resolve Print Issues (opens in a new window) – ZD410 Desktop Printer User Guide (official documentation).

How do I clean or replace the platen roller on a Zebra ZD410 when labels slip or jam?

Symptoms: labels slipping, sticking or jamming; distorted printing.

Short answer: A dirty platen roller makes the media slip or stick and can damage the head. Remove it, clean it with 99% alcohol from the centre outwards and let it dry for one minute; if it still sticks after cleaning, replace it.

Likely cause

Zebra cites adhesive, dirt, dust, oils and other deposits on the roller: they make the media slip or stick and can damage the printhead.

Caution: Never reuse a swab: it would recontaminate the roller.

Official roller cleaning procedure

  1. Open the cover (and the peeler door if one is installed), then remove the media from the roller area.
  2. Pull the roller bearing latch tabs on the right and left towards you, then rotate them upwards.
  3. Lift the roller out of the bottom frame, then remove the gear and the two bearings from its shaft.
  4. Clean the roller with a lint-free swab or a clean cloth lightly moistened with medical alcohol of at least 99%, from the centre outwards, until the whole surface is clean. If there is a heavy build-up of adhesive, repeat with a new swab.
  5. Throw away the used swabs.
  6. Put the bearings and the gear back on the shaft, align the roller with the gear on the left and set it back in the frame.
  7. Fold the tabs back until they click, then let it dry for one minute before closing and reloading the media.

If the media still sticks or jams after cleaning, Zebra asks you to replace the roller. Standard rollers are black (203 dpi) or grey (300 dpi).

How do I clean the sensors on a Zebra ZD410 that does not detect labels correctly?

Symptoms: unjustified “Media Out”, erratic gap detection.

Short answer: Dust off the upper sensor (gap/web) and the movable sensor with a dry swab or a can of compressed air. If adhesive remains, use a swab moistened with alcohol, then wipe with a dry swab.

Likely cause

Dust builds up on the sensors over time, hence Zebra's recommendation to clean them regularly.

Caution: Do not use an air compressor: it can blow moisture, particles and lubricant into the printer. Wear safety glasses when you use compressed air.

Official procedure

  1. Gently brush the dust off the sensor with a dry swab, or use a can of compressed air.
  2. If adhesive or other deposits remain, rub with a swab moistened with alcohol.
  3. Wipe off any residue with a dry swab.
  4. Repeat until there are no deposits or marks left on the sensor.
  5. Reload the media, adjust the movable sensor and run a calibration again.

Several of these faults involve the labels or paper used. TIMCOD, Zebra reseller, supplies labels and printheads for thermal printers (pages in French).

Zebra ZD410 print quality: faded print, darkness, blank labels

Zebra links most print defects to the darkness and speed settings, the condition of the printhead and platen roller, and the media type.

Why is my Zebra ZD410 printing faintly or poorly, and how do I clean the printhead?

Symptoms: faded or uneven print, poorly printed barcodes.

Short answer: Zebra first cites an unsuitable darkness or speed setting and a dirty head. Clean the head with a new cleaning pen, from the centre outwards, then print the print quality report to find the right darkness.

Likely cause

Causes listed by Zebra: darkness or speed set incorrectly, dirty printhead, dirty or damaged platen roller, worn or damaged head, power supply that is not the one supplied with the printer.

Caution: The head gets hot during printing: do not touch it. Use a new cleaning pen each time, as a used pen can damage the head, and protect yourself against electrostatic discharge. Do not set a speed higher than the maximum speed the media allows.

What to do (including the official head cleaning)

  1. Open the cover and rub a new cleaning pen over the dark area of the head, from the centre outwards, to push the adhesive out of the media path.
  2. Wait one minute before closing, to give the head time to dry.
  3. Print the print quality report and note the best setting (see darkness adjustment).
  4. Clean or replace the platen roller if it is dirty or damaged.
  5. Check that you are using the power supply delivered with the printer.
  6. If the quality is still poor, the head may be worn: see replacing the head.

The Zebra cleaning page recommends cleaning the head with every new roll; the Zebra maintenance schedule specifies cleaning every five rolls.

Sources: Resolve Print Issues (opens in a new window) · Cleaning the Printhead (opens in a new window) · Recommended Cleaning Schedule (opens in a new window) – ZD410 Desktop Printer User Guide (official documentation).

How do I adjust the print darkness (contrast) on a Zebra ZD410?

Symptoms: print too light or too dark, barcodes hard to read.

Short answer: Print the print quality report (FEED self-test) to compare several darkness levels, or use the manual darkness setting in advanced mode. Keep the level that gives solid, even black lines.

Likely cause

According to Zebra, each media requires a different darkness setting.

Caution: Do not exceed the maximum print speed specified for your media.

What to do

  1. Quality report (FEED self-test): the printer prints a series of labels ranging from three steps below the current setting to three steps above, at two speeds (51 and 152 mm/s at 203 dpi, 51 and 102 mm/s at 300 dpi). Each label shows its relative darkness and its speed: compare the barcodes.
  2. Manual setting: with media loaded, hold PAUSE for two seconds to enter advanced mode, then press FEED until you reach the darkness setting (DATA light orange).
  3. Press PAUSE: the printer prints a test pattern with the darkness number and barcodes, pauses, then moves on to the next level.
  4. When a pattern shows solid, even black lines suited to your labels, press FEED to save that level: the printer returns to the ready state.

Why does my Zebra ZD410 produce blank labels without printing anything?

Symptoms: the labels feed but remain blank.

Short answer: Either the media is not direct thermal paper or it is loaded upside down. The ZD410 prints in direct thermal mode: check the media and load it with the printable side facing up, towards the head.

Likely cause

Zebra cites two causes: media of an incompatible type (media for thermal transfer, or media that is not direct thermal) and media loaded incorrectly, with the printable side not facing the head.

What to do

  1. Check that the media really is direct thermal paper; for this, the Zebra guide offers a media scratch test.
  2. Reload the roll with the printable side facing up, towards the head (see loading labels).

Zebra ZD410 printhead: when should it be replaced?

When neither cleaning nor adjusting the darkness is enough, the head may be worn. The Zebra guide describes the precautions to take before replacing it.

When should the printhead on a Zebra ZD410 be replaced?

Symptoms: quality does not recover after cleaning and adjustment · Lights: possible STATUS solid orange (faulty head element).

Short answer: If printing is still poor after cleaning the head, adjusting the darkness and cleaning the roller, Zebra states that the head may be worn or damaged and must be replaced. A solid orange STATUS light can also indicate a faulty head element.

Likely cause

Wear or damage to the printhead. The French guide also lists a faulty head element among the causes of a solid orange STATUS light.

Caution: Unplug the printer and let it cool down before working on it, to avoid injury and damage to the circuits. Electrostatic discharge can destroy the head.

What to do

  1. First rule out the other causes: head cleaning, darkness, platen roller.
  2. Before replacing the head, unplug the printer and let it cool down.
  3. Work at a station protected against static electricity: grounded mat and anti-static wrist strap.
  4. Pull the release levers towards you, lift the cover, then follow the head removal and installation steps described in the Zebra guide.

Zebra ZD410 connection problems: USB, serial, Ethernet and Wi-Fi

The Zebra guide covers USB installation under Windows, data that does not reach the printer, serial settings and the network lights.

Why is my Zebra ZD410 connected by USB not recognised by Windows?

Symptoms: printer not recognised over USB, Windows test page impossible.

Short answer: The USB cable was connected before the Zebra driver was installed: Windows installed a generic driver. Disconnect the cable, remove the Zebra printer listed under “Unspecified”, install the Zebra driver, then reconnect the cable.

Likely cause

According to Zebra, the USB cable was connected before the correct driver was pre-installed, and Windows installed a generic printer driver.

What to do

  1. Disconnect the USB cable from the computer.
  2. Open Control Panel > Devices and Printers.
  3. Find the Zebra printer in the “Unspecified” section (Zebra printers appear there with the ZTC prefix) and remove it.

Why does my Zebra ZD410 print nothing even though the job has been sent (DATA light not flashing)?

Symptoms: label format not recognised, nothing prints · Lights: DATA does not flash.

Short answer: The data is not reaching the printer. Check the communication settings in the driver or the software; on a serial link, check that the handshake protocol and port settings are identical on both sides and that the cable is compliant.

Likely cause

Zebra cites incorrect communication settings, serial settings (handshake protocol, port) different from those of the computer, or a serial cable that is non-standard (DTE or DCE), damaged or too long for the RS-232 standard.

What to do

  1. Check the communication settings in the printer driver or the labelling software.
  2. On a serial link, set the handshake protocol and the printer port settings to match those of the computer.
  3. Check the serial cable: standard DTE or DCE type, in good condition and of a length that complies with the RS-232 standard.

What does the red NETWORK light mean on my Zebra ZD410, and how do I reset the network?

Lights: NETWORK solid red (faulty connection), flashing orange (Wi-Fi authentication), flashing red (Wi-Fi association), flashing green (weak Wi-Fi signal).

Short answer: A solid red NETWORK light indicates a faulty Ethernet or Wi-Fi connection. Print the configuration reports (FEED and CANCEL for two seconds) to check the network settings; if necessary, reset the network by turning the printer back on with PAUSE and CANCEL held down.

Likely cause

According to the French guide, the NETWORK light is solid green for a 10/100 Ethernet link or Wi-Fi with a strong signal, solid orange for a 10Base Ethernet link, flashing green for Wi-Fi with a weak signal, flashing orange during Wi-Fi authentication, flashing red during Wi-Fi association and solid red if the Ethernet or Wi-Fi connection is faulty.

What to do

  1. Print the configuration reports: with the printer ready (STATUS solid green), hold FEED and CANCEL for two seconds, then release. The ZD410 prints the Printer Configuration report, then the Network Configuration report.
  2. Check the printer's connection settings on the network report.
  3. To restore only the factory network settings: turn the printer off, hold PAUSE and CANCEL, turn it back on and keep the buttons held down until only STATUS stays on. No report is printed at the end.
  4. Another method: press the RESET button, underneath the printer, for 6 to 10 seconds with a paper clip. The printer drops its network connection, restores the factory network settings and prints the configuration reports.

The NETWORK light relates to the Ethernet and Wi-Fi options of the ZD410.

Zebra ZD410 battery: why is the light red?

This section covers the optional battery base for the ZD410.

Why is the battery light on my Zebra ZD410 red?

Lights (optional battery base): battery health indicator solid red or flashing red.

Short answer: On the optional battery base, a red indicator signals a battery at the end of its life, an internal failure or a battery that is too hot or too cold. Remove the battery, recharge it at room temperature and replace it if the fault persists.

Likely cause

The French guide specifies: health indicator green, battery in good condition and charged; orange, charging (printer off); solid red, internal error (remove the battery); flashing red, charging error due to temperature or an internal monitoring fault. The troubleshooting page also cites the battery reaching end of life or a component failure.

What to do

  1. If the battery has reached the end of its life or has a component failure, replace it.
  2. If it is too hot or too cold, remove it from the printer and check its condition by recharging it.
  3. Let it return to room temperature, then check the charge again.
  4. If neither the charge nor the temperature is the cause, replace the battery.

Charge level according to Zebra: three green bars, battery full; top bar flashing, incomplete charge; a single green bar flashing, recharging required; no bar lit, battery needs recharging (the printer cannot turn on).

Other questions about the Zebra ZD410: pause and routine maintenance

PAUSE light on, cleaning frequency: the answers from the Zebra guide.

Why does the PAUSE light on my Zebra ZD410 stay on without printing starting?

Lights: PAUSE solid orange.

Short answer: The printer is paused: it stops after the current label. Press PAUSE again to resume printing, including a multi-label job that is waiting.

Likely cause

The PAUSE button interrupts printing and media movement; the solid orange PAUSE light indicates this. Not to be confused with the green STATUS light flashing slowly, a sign that the printer is in sleep mode.

What to do

  1. Press PAUSE: the printer resumes printing, including a multi-label job that is waiting.
  2. To delete the next format from the buffer instead of printing it, press CANCEL.
  3. If printing does not resume, note the state of the STATUS light in the signal table.

Source: Operator controls (opens in a new window) – ZD410 Desktop Printer – User Guide, French edition (P1130712-01FR) (official documentation).

How often should a Zebra ZD410 be cleaned?

Preventive maintenance.

Short answer: Zebra recommends cleaning the head every five rolls, and the platen roller, the media path and the interior whenever necessary. Use 99% isopropyl alcohol, lint-free swabs and cleaning pens.

Caution: Do not re-moisten a swab or cloth that has already been used. Too much alcohol can contaminate the electronic components and lengthen the drying time. Do not use an air compressor, and wear safety glasses with compressed air. When cleaning the media path, do not clean the head, the movable sensor or the roller.

Zebra cleaning schedule

  1. Printhead: every five rolls, with a cleaning pen (see head cleaning).
  2. Platen roller: as soon as print quality drops or the media slips (see platen roller).
  3. Media path: as needed, with a swab or a lint-free cloth lightly moistened with 99% alcohol. Wipe the inside of the compartment, the roll holders, the underside of the guides and the movable sensor slide (not the sensor), then let it dry for one minute.
  4. Interior: soft cloth, brush or compressed air; 99% alcohol and a lint-free cloth for greasy deposits.
  5. Exterior: soft cloth, brush or compressed air, or a cloth very lightly dampened with soapy water, with no liquid near the connectors or inside.
  6. Cutter: only the outer frame; never the blade or the mechanism (see cutter).

The healthcare models (Healthcare) have plastics that resist UV and disinfectants: Zebra refers you to its disinfection guide for approved products.

Zebra ZD410 troubleshooting: frequently asked questions

How do I calibrate a Zebra ZD410?

With the printer on and ready (STATUS light solid green), hold down PAUSE and CANCEL for two seconds, then release. The ZD410 feeds a few labels and adjusts its detection thresholds, then the STATUS light returns to solid green. If the media is not recognised, Zebra suggests a manual calibration from advanced mode. See the detailed entry.

Why does my Zebra ZD410 have a red light?

According to Zebra, a solid red STATUS light indicates media out, a media detection error, an open cover or a head authentication failure. If the SUPPLIES light is also red, the media has run out or is not detected. Check the loading and that the cover is closed, then recalibrate. See the detailed entry.

Why is my Zebra ZD410 flashing red?

When the STATUS and PAUSE lights flash red, the Zebra guide indicates head overheating. Let the head cool down, turn the printer off, wait five seconds and turn it back on. If the error returns, call in a technician. See the detailed entry.

How do I reset a Zebra ZD410?

Turn the printer off, hold PAUSE and FEED, turn it back on and keep the buttons held down until only the STATUS light stays on. The non-network settings return to their factory values. Then recalibrate the media. See the detailed entry.

How do I clean the printhead on a Zebra ZD410?

Rub a new cleaning pen over the dark area of the head, from the centre outwards, then wait one minute before closing. Do not touch the head when it is hot and protect it from static electricity. Zebra recommends this cleaning every five rolls. See the detailed entry.

Why is my Zebra ZD410 printing blank labels?

The ZD410 prints in direct thermal mode: the media must be direct thermal paper, loaded with the printable side facing up, towards the head. Media for thermal transfer or a roll loaded upside down produces blank labels. See the detailed entry.

How do I print a configuration label on a Zebra ZD410?

With the printer ready (STATUS light solid green), hold FEED and CANCEL for two seconds, then release. The ZD410 prints the Printer Configuration report, then the Network Configuration report. See the detailed entry.

Why is my Zebra ZD410 skipping labels?

Zebra calls this a registration fault: media incorrectly loaded, movable sensor badly positioned or sensors not calibrated. Check the loading and the sensor, run a SmartCal calibration, then a manual calibration if necessary. A slipping platen roller can also be the cause. See the detailed entry.
