Zebra ZD611 troubleshooting guide: errors, faults and fixes
Phone support, repair and express exchange by TIMCOD technicians. The request form is in French.
In brief. The Zebra ZD611 is a 2-inch desktop thermal label printer (56 mm print width), available in thermal transfer (ZD611t), direct thermal (ZD611d), with a Healthcare option and in a UHF RFID version (ZD611R). Zebra publishes a user guide for each variant; their troubleshooting pages are shared and this guide brings them together. The most frequent alerts come from poorly detected media (empty roll, movable sensor badly positioned or dirty), a printhead cover that is not properly latched and the printhead temperature. Here you will find the messages and lights, SmartCal calibration and manual calibration using the buttons, cleaning, USB recognition on Windows and RFID calibration on the ZD611R. Click a question to open its entry.
- A message or a yellow or red screen appears (Media/Labels Out, Printhead/Cover Open, Cut Error…): find it in the lookup table, which points you to the right entry.
- Labels drift or print quality deteriorates with no message: see SmartCal calibration, manual calibration and the print quality entry.
- The same faults keep coming back: the preventive maintenance section explains how regular servicing reduces them.

The light states come from the “ZD611D Standard Interface Controls” page (light-by-light description), the “Detecting a Ribbon Out Condition” page and the “Activating Advanced Mode” page of the Zebra ZD611 guides. The “Meaning of the Indicator Light Patterns” table in the ZD611R guide shows the combinations as images, without describing them in text. “Amber” is the colour name used in the Zebra guides. The dash indicates that the page consulted does not specify the state of the lights.
Zebra ZD611 alerts: what each message means and how to resolve it
The alerts below appear in the “Resolving Alerts and Errors” section of the ZD611 guides, supplemented by what the colour touch display shows. Each entry gives the short solution, the cause according to Zebra, the steps and, where applicable, the point beyond which a technician must step in.
Why does my Zebra ZD611 show “Printhead/Cover Open” when I have closed the cover?
Message: Printhead/Cover Open · Lights: STATUS solid red.
Short answer: The ZD611 considers the printhead cover to be open when it receives a print command or a button press. Press firmly on both front corners of the cover until it latches; if the message comes back with the cover closed, the head-open switch must be checked by a technician.
Likely cause
According to the ZD611T guide, the alert is triggered when the printer receives a print job or a button press while the printhead cover is not closed. If the cover is properly latched, Zebra points to the head-open switch.
What to do
- Lower the printhead cover.
- Press on the front corners of the top of the cover: the latches must click into place and lock it.
- If the alert reappears while the cover is latched, do not force the mechanism: the switch needs checking.
When to call a technician: if the message persists with the cover latched, the Zebra guide asks you to call a technician for the head-open switch.

Why does my Zebra ZD611 report “Media/Labels Out” when a roll is still loaded?
Message: Media/Labels Out · Lights: STATUS solid red, SUPPLIES solid red.
Short answer: The ZD611 can no longer see any media in the paper path. Zebra cites six causes, from an empty roll or a missing label to a movable sensor that is badly positioned, dirty or faulty. Most often, advancing to the next label or repositioning the movable sensor is enough.
Likely cause
The ZD611T guide lists: no more labels on the roll; a label missing in the middle of the roll or fan-fold stack, which some manufacturers leave out deliberately to indicate the end of the roll; a movable media sensor incorrectly set for the media type; a printer set for non-continuous media (gap or black mark) when continuous media is loaded; a sensor dirty with adhesive or dust; a sensor that no longer works (corrupted memory data or faulty component).
What to do
- Empty roll: load a new roll.
- Missing label: open the printer, pull the media through to the next label, close the printer and press PAUSE. If the printer stays paused without feeding, press FEED once or twice.
- Sensor badly positioned: set the movable media sensor for your media type.
- Continuous media with a non-continuous setting: load the correct media, set the sensor for continuous media, finish loading and then run a calibration (see the SmartCal entry).
- Dirty sensor: clean the movable media sensor, then inspect the media compartment, the rest of the paper path and the roll holders.
- Sensor still not working: update the printer firmware.
When to call a technician: if the sensor still detects nothing after the firmware update, Zebra concludes that the component has failed and asks you to call a technician.
When a missing label marks the end of the roll, Zebra advises against using the remaining labels: they can transfer the adhesive that holds them to the core.

What should I do when my Zebra ZD611t reports the end of the ribbon (“Ribbon Out”)?
Status: Ribbon Out · Lights: STATUS solid red, SUPPLIES flashing red.
Short answer: The ribbon has run out: the reflective end-of-ribbon trailer is visible and the take-up roll is full. Without switching off the printer, remove the used take-up roll, load a new ribbon and press FEED once to resume.
Likely cause
Zebra presents ribbon out as a normal stage in the consumables cycle. The ZD611 detects it thanks to the reflective trailer that appears under the ribbon at the end of the roll.
What to do
- Open the printer without turning it off.
- Check that the reflective trailer is visible and that the take-up roll, at the front, is full.
- Remove the used take-up roll and dispose of it appropriately. Leave the empty core in place, at the bottom rear of the ribbon carriage.
- Load a new roll of ribbon.
- Press FEED (Advance) once to resume printing.
Applies to thermal transfer models (ZD611t and ZD611R). The ZD611d, a direct thermal model, does not use ribbon.

Why does my Zebra ZD611 pause with “Printhead Over Temperature”?
Message: Printhead Over Temperature · Lights: STATUS solid amber.
Short answer: The ZD611 suspends printing to let an overheated printhead cool down. During a long, heavy job, wait: it restarts by itself. If the alert is frequent, the room is probably too hot or the printer is exposed to the sun.
Likely cause
According to Zebra, two situations lead to this: a large batch of dense prints, or a room hotter than the specified operating range, with direct exposure to sunlight possibly raising the temperature further.
Caution: Zebra points out that the printhead gets hot during printing: do not touch it.
What to do
- Wait: the printer stops, cools down, then resumes by itself as soon as the printhead is cool enough.
- If the room is too hot, cool it down or install the printer in a cooler place, out of direct sunlight.
The ZD611D guide specifies that STATUS and PAUSE flashing red together mean you must let the printer cool down and then restart it: see PRINTHEAD SHUTDOWN.

How do I restart my Zebra ZD611 after the “PRINTHEAD SHUTDOWN” alert?
Message: PRINTHEAD SHUTDOWN · Lights: STATUS and PAUSE flashing red (ZD611D guide).
Short answer: The printhead is overheating. Switch off the ZD611, let it cool down for several minutes, then switch it back on.
Likely cause
The PRINTHEAD SHUTDOWN label appears on the image of the “Meaning of the Indicator Light Patterns” table in the ZD611R guide, which describes this state as an overheating printhead requiring a complete shutdown.
Caution: Do not touch the printhead: it gets hot during printing.
What to do
- Switch the printer off.
- Let it cool down for several minutes.
- Switch it back on.
The ZD611D guide associates STATUS and PAUSE flashing red with printhead overheating, which requires you to let the printer cool down and then restart it.

What does the “Printhead Under Temperature” alert mean on my Zebra ZD611?
Message: Printhead Under Temperature · Lights: STATUS flashing amber.
Short answer: The printhead is not reaching the temperature needed for correct printing, usually because the room is too cold. Warm the room or move the ZD611 to a more temperate place; if the alert persists at a suitable temperature, Zebra states that the printhead needs replacing.
Likely cause
The ZD611R guide cites two causes: an environment colder than the printer's operating range, or a faulty printhead that stays below its operating temperature even though the room is suitable.
Caution: Avoid rapid temperature changes: Zebra warns of a risk of condensation inside and outside the printer.
What to do
- Raise the room temperature or move the printer to a warmer place.
- After a critical temperature incident or a power cut: switch off the printer, move it if necessary and let it warm up gradually.
- Reinstall it, then switch it back on.
- If the alert persists in a room at a suitable temperature, replace the printhead.

Why does my Zebra ZD611 show “Out Of Memory” when I send a label?
Message: Out Of Memory · Lights: DATA flashing amber, STATUS solid amber.
Short answer: The ZD611 does not have enough free memory to store the file received. Free up space by deleting unused graphics, fonts or formats, or by reducing the print area.
Likely cause
According to Zebra, the printer cannot write to the requested memory location because there is not enough space for the operation shown on the second line of the message. It distinguishes four types of storage: graphic, format, bitmap and font.
What to do
- Reduce the print area by changing the label format or the printer settings.
- Delete the graphics, fonts or formats you no longer use.
- Make sure the data is not directed to a device that is not installed or is unavailable.
Sources: Alert: Out Of Memory (opens in a new window) – ZD611R user guide · ZD611D Standard Interface Controls (opens in a new window) – ZD611D user guide (official documentation).
What does a yellow or red home screen mean on my Zebra ZD611 with a touch display?
Symptoms: yellow or red home screen background (optional colour touch display).
Short answer: A yellow or red background indicates that the ZD611 is in an alert or error state; the display then shows the corresponding message. Note this message and open its entry from the lookup table.
Likely cause
According to the ZD611T guide, the optional colour touch display shows alert and error messages for the operator. Printers fitted with it also keep the standard buttons and lights.
What to do
- Read the message shown on the display.
- Look it up in the lookup table and follow the entry indicated.
- If needed, consult the display's built-in help, or the quick link to Zebra's online instructions and how-to videos, which can be viewed on a mobile device.

Explore TIMCOD preventive maintenanceCalibrating the Zebra ZD611: labels skipped, offset or printed as if continuous
SmartCal, manual calibration using the buttons in advanced mode and the media type setting: the procedures Zebra describes for the ZD611.
How do I run a SmartCal calibration on a Zebra ZD611?
Symptoms: labels skipped or poorly detected after a media change.
Short answer: With the printer ready (STATUS solid green), press PAUSE and CANCEL together for two seconds, then release. The ZD611 measures a few labels, sets its detection levels and returns to solid green.
Likely cause
SmartCal recognises the media type (gap, black mark or notch, continuous) and measures its characteristics. Zebra points out that the media must be loaded and the movable sensor set for this media type before starting calibration.
Official SmartCal calibration procedure
- Load the media and set the movable media sensor for its type. For thermal transfer, also install the ribbon. Close the top cover.
- Switch on the printer with the POWER button.
- Wait for the STATUS light to be solid green: the printer is ready.
- Press PAUSE and CANCEL together for two seconds, then release.
- The ZD611 measures a few labels and adjusts its detection levels; when it stops, STATUS returns to solid green.
There is no need to recalibrate for each roll of the same media: the printer compensates for small variations during printing. After a new roll from the same batch, pressing FEED once or twice synchronises the labels. If the media is still difficult to calibrate, Zebra refers you to manual calibration.

How do I calibrate a Zebra ZD611 manually when SmartCal does not recognise the labels?
Symptoms: media difficult to detect (pre-printed, black mark or notched). Lights: all flashing yellow when entering advanced mode, then STATUS solid yellow.
Short answer: Enter advanced mode by holding PAUSE for two seconds with media loaded: all lights flash yellow, then STATUS stays solid yellow on the Manual Media Calibration mode. Press PAUSE to start it, then follow the steps to measure the liner and the labels.
Likely cause
Zebra intends this mode for media that is difficult to detect: it applies finer sensor tuning than SmartCal.
Official manual calibration procedure (advanced mode)
- With media loaded and the printer switched on, hold PAUSE for two seconds: all lights flash yellow, then STATUS stays solid yellow (Manual Media Calibration mode selected). FEED scrolls through the other modes, CANCEL exits advanced mode.
- Press PAUSE once to start calibration: the media light flashes yellow, then the PAUSE light flashes.
- Open the printer and position the movable sensor: in the centre for gap media (transmissive), facing the mark or notch for black mark or notched media, over a lightly printed area for pre-printed media.
- Peel about 80 mm (3 inches) of labels off their liner.
- Lay the section of liner with no labels over the platen roller, with the leading edge of the first label under the media guides.
- Close the printer and press PAUSE once: the media light flashes while the liner is measured, then the PAUSE light flashes.
- Open the printer, place a label just above the movable sensor and close it again.
- Press PAUSE once: the printer feeds and measures several labels. If it identifies the media type and its length, it returns to the ready state, STATUS solid green.
With pre-printed media, you may need to repeat the calibration, moving the sensor, until the printer returns to the ready state.

Why does my Zebra ZD611 print my labels as if they were continuous media?
Symptoms: format for separate labels, suitable media loaded, but printing as if on a continuous roll.
Short answer: The printer is configured for continuous media. Set the media type to gap/notch or mark, then run a SmartCal calibration; if the media calibrates poorly, use manual calibration.
Likely cause
According to the ZD611R guide, the ZD611 is set for continuous media while non-continuous labels are loaded.
What to do
- Set the printer's media type to match your labels: gap/notch, continuous or mark.
- Run a SmartCal calibration (see the SmartCal entry).
- If the media is still difficult to calibrate, switch to manual calibration.
Source: Issue: Non-continuous Labels act as Continuous Labels. (opens in a new window) – ZD611R user guide (official documentation).
Why is the image printed by my Zebra ZD611 shifting or distorted?
Symptoms: distorted image, print position varying from one label to the next.
Short answer: Zebra cites media reloaded incorrectly or a sensor set incorrectly, a dirty interior or a worn platen roller. Inspect and clean the paper path, the sensors, the roller and then the printhead, reload the media and recalibrate with SmartCal.
Likely cause
The ZD611R guide gives three causes: the media is loaded incorrectly, the movable sensor is positioned incorrectly or the media needs calibrating; the inside of the printer needs cleaning; the platen roller is worn or damaged. As it ages, this roller becomes smoother and less supple, and grips the media less well.
What to do
- Leave the printer switched on and remove the media.
- Inspect the paper path, the roll holders and the guides (paper dust, adhesive), as well as the platen roller (damage, dust, adhesive).
- Check the position of the movable sensor for your media type and the cleanliness of its window.
- If necessary, clean in this order the paper path, the sensors, the platen roller, then the printhead last (see the printhead cleaning entry).
- Reload the media and run a SmartCal calibration (see the SmartCal entry).
- If the platen roller is worn or damaged, replace it.

Media feed on the Zebra ZD611: labels slipping, sticking or jamming
The platen roller feeds the media; Zebra describes when to clean it, how to remove it and when to replace it.
How do I clean the platen roller on my Zebra ZD611 when labels slip or stick?
Symptoms: media slipping, sticking or jamming; quality or operation clearly impaired.
Short answer: The ZD611 platen roller does not normally need maintenance, but adhesive, dirt or oils can cause the media to slip or stick. Remove it, wipe it from the centre outwards with a swab barely moistened with isopropyl alcohol of at least 99.7%, then wait one minute before closing.
Likely cause
According to the ZD611R guide, paper and liner dust can accumulate without affecting printing; on the other hand, adhesive, dirt, dust or oils must be removed immediately, as they can damage the printhead or cause the media to slip and stick. A roller that sticks or still causes jams after cleaning must be replaced.
Caution: Only use a fibre-free swab or a lint-free cloth and pure isopropyl alcohol of at least 99.7%, moistening very lightly.
Official roller cleaning procedure
- Open the cover, as well as the dispenser door if one is fitted, and clear the media away from the roller area.
- Pull the bearing release tabs on the right and left towards the front, then lift them up.
- Take the roller out of the lower frame by holding it by the bearing arms, then remove the drive gear and both bearings from its shaft.
- Wipe the roller from the centre outwards with the lightly moistened swab until its entire surface is clean. If there is heavy adhesive build-up or after a jam, repeat with a new swab.
- Throw away the swabs after use; do not reuse them.
- Check that the bearings and the gear are on the shaft, place the gear on the left and lower the roller back into the frame.
- Fold the tabs back towards the rear, on both sides, until they click into place.
- Leave to dry for one minute before closing the dispenser door or the cover, or reloading the labels.
The printhead cleaning pen must not be used on the platen roller.

Zebra ZD611 print quality: faded, blurred or patchy image
Zebra lists six causes of poor print quality on the ZD611 and describes cleaning the printhead with a cleaning pen.
Why is the print quality on my Zebra ZD611 poor?
Symptoms: incorrect image, print too light or too dark, blurred, smudged or with gaps.
Short answer: Zebra reviews six causes: darkness or speed set incorrectly, dirty printhead, worn printhead, dirty or damaged platen roller, ribbon unsuited to the media and non-original power supply. Start with the print quality report (FEED self test) to set darkness and speed.
Likely cause
According to the ZD611R guide, the darkness or speed may be set incorrectly for the media; a dirty printhead distorts the image or leaves gaps; both the printhead and the platen roller wear and can be damaged; in thermal transfer, a ribbon (wax, wax-resin or resin) poorly matched to the media gives blurred print, marks or random gaps; finally, printing requires a lot of power, and an undersized power supply can cause defects.
What to do
- Print the print quality report (FEED self test) to determine the appropriate darkness and speed, without exceeding the maximum speed specified by the media and ribbon manufacturers.
- Clean the printhead (see the cleaning entry).
- Clean or replace the platen roller (see the platen roller entry).
- Replace the printhead if it is worn or damaged.
- For thermal transfer, check that the ribbon suits the media, limit the speed to that recommended for the ribbon and check the settings with the quality report.
- Use the power supply supplied with the printer.

How do I clean the printhead on my Zebra ZD611 when print quality deteriorates?
Symptoms: distorted image or gaps in the print, which Zebra links to a dirty printhead.
Short answer: Zebra links a dirty printhead to a distorted image or gaps. Clean it with a new cleaning pen, from the middle towards the edges of the dark area, after removing the ribbon, then wait one minute before closing.
Likely cause
Adhesive left by the edges of the media builds up on the printhead. The ZD611R guide advises regular cleaning to maintain good print quality and extend the life of the printer, for example when loading new media or a new ribbon.
Caution: The printhead gets hot during printing: do not touch it, to avoid damaging it and injuring yourself. Follow anti-static precautions, especially under the top cover: an electrostatic discharge can damage the printhead and the electronics. Do not use a pen that has already been used, and do not run the pen over the platen roller.
Official printhead cleaning procedure
- Open the printer, as you would to change the roll.
- Remove the transfer ribbon if one is installed (ZD611t, ZD611R).
- Wipe a new cleaning pen across the dark area of the printhead, from the middle outwards, to push adhesive out of the media path.
- Wait one minute before closing the printer.

Schedule preventive maintenanceZebra ZD611 printhead: resolution error or unauthorised printhead
The two messages that appear when the ZD611 does not recognise the installed printhead.
Why does my Zebra ZD611 show “Printhead Resolution Error” after the printhead has been replaced?
Messages: Printhead Resolution Error, Unauthorized Printhead Error · Lights: STATUS solid red if printhead authentication fails.
Short answer: The ZD611 cannot read the resolution (dpi) of the printhead: it has been replaced incorrectly or is not a Zebra printhead. With “Unauthorized Printhead Error”, the printhead is not a genuine Zebra part: install a genuine Zebra printhead to continue.
Likely cause
The light table in the ZD611R guide distinguishes two cases: an unreadable resolution, because the printhead was replaced incorrectly or with a non-Zebra printhead; a printhead that is not a genuine Zebra part.
Caution: Do not touch the printhead just after printing: it gets hot. Follow anti-static precautions before handling it.
What to do
- After a replacement, check that the printhead was installed following the replacement procedure in the Zebra user guide.
- If the printhead is not genuine, replace it with a genuine Zebra printhead.

Zebra ZD611 connection: USB not recognised on Windows, NETWORK light
USB recognition on Windows and reading the NETWORK light, based on the Zebra guides.
Why does my Zebra ZD611 connected via USB appear as “Unspecified” in Windows?
Symptoms: printer connected via USB before the driver was installed, listed under “Unspecified” in Devices and Printers, Windows test page impossible.
Short answer: The USB cable was connected before the Zebra driver was pre-installed: Windows installed its generic driver. Disconnect the cable, remove the “Unspecified” printer in Devices and Printers, install the Zebra v8 Windows driver, then reconnect.
Likely cause
According to Zebra, Windows installs a generic driver when the printer is connected via USB before the Zebra driver: the printer is then not recognised correctly and the Windows test page fails.
What to do
- Disconnect the printer's USB cable at the computer end.
- Open Control Panel > Devices and Printers: the printer appears under “Unspecified” and not in the Printers section.
- Select the Zebra “Unspecified” entry and remove it.
- Install the Zebra v8 Windows printer driver if you have not already done so.
- Reconnect the USB cable: the printer should now appear in the Printers section.
Zebra printers can be identified by the “ZTC” prefix in their name.

What do the colours of the NETWORK light on my Zebra ZD611 mean?
Light: NETWORK amber, green or red, solid or flashing.
Short answer: The ZD611 NETWORK light gives information on the Ethernet or Wi-Fi connection: solid green for a 10/100 link or Wi-Fi with a strong signal, solid amber for a 10Base Ethernet link, solid red for a fault. When flashing, it indicates a Wi-Fi connection in progress (red, then amber) or a weak signal (green).
Likely cause
According to the ZD611D guide, solid red corresponds to an Ethernet or Wi-Fi fault. The light table in the ZD611R guide specifies that a link fault means the printer is not connected to the network, and that the NETWORK light is off when there is no Ethernet link.
What to do
- Note the colour and rhythm of the NETWORK light.
- Flashing red: the printer is associating with the Wi-Fi network; flashing amber: authentication in progress. Wait until the connection is complete.
- Flashing green: the printer is connected, but the Wi-Fi signal is weak.
- Solid red: Ethernet or Wi-Fi fault, the printer is not connected to the network. Check the connection and the network settings, for example using the network (and Bluetooth) configuration report provided in the printer's onboard tools.

Zebra ZD611 cutter: “Cut Error” alert
The optional cutter cannot be repaired by the operator; Zebra limits the user's action to a restart.
How do I free up the cutter on my Zebra ZD611 when it shows “Cut Error”?
Message: Cut Error · Lights: STATUS solid red.
Short answer: The cutter blade is jammed by particles of adhesive and paper. Switch off the ZD611 by holding the power button for 5 seconds, wait until it has shut down completely and switch it back on; if the error does not clear, contact a technician, as the operator must not work on the cutter.
Likely cause
The ZD611R guide explains that adhesive and paper particles can jam the blade, which then no longer moves correctly.
Caution: The cutter contains no operator-serviceable parts. Never remove its cover (bezel), never insert objects or fingers into it, and do not use unapproved tools, cotton buds or solvents (including alcohol): they can damage it, shorten its life or cause it to jam.
What to do
- Switch off the printer: hold the power button (POWER) for 5 seconds.
- Wait until it has shut down completely.
- Switch the printer back on.
When to call a technician: if the printer does not clear the error after a restart, Zebra asks you to contact a technician: the cutter cannot be repaired by the operator.

Zebra ZD611 power and battery: sleep mode, red battery light
What the STATUS light in sleep mode and the red light on the optional battery mean.
Why does the STATUS light on my Zebra ZD611 slowly turn green on and off?
Light: STATUS green, alternating slowly, all other lights off.
Short answer: The ZD611 is in Energy Star low-power mode: a brief press of the power button puts it into this mode, and only the STATUS light remains active, alternating slowly. To switch the printer off completely, hold the power button for 4 to 9 seconds.
Likely cause
The ZD611D guide describes this mode: the printer reduces its power consumption, and all lights go off except STATUS, which slowly turns on and off.
What to do
- A brief press on POWER puts the printer into low-power mode.
- Holding POWER for 4 to 9 seconds switches the printer off; with the delayed Energy Star option, it can first finish a print batch before going into standby.
- To switch it back on, hold POWER until the lights flash: the printer runs its self-diagnostics, then STATUS turns solid green when it is ready.
The printer switches on by itself when it is plugged into a live mains socket.

What should I do when the battery on my Zebra ZD611 shows a red light?
Light: battery health solid red or flashing red.
Short answer: The red light indicates a battery fault: end of life, component failure, or battery too hot or too cold. Let it return to room temperature, check its charge by recharging it, then replace it if the fault persists.
Likely cause
The ZD611R guide cites two causes: a battery that has reached the end of its life or suffered a component failure, and a battery that is too hot or too cold. On the Battery Health light, solid red corresponds to an internal error; flashing red, to a charging error, a temperature that is too high or too low, or an internal monitoring error.
What to do
- Briefly press the battery button: it wakes up, checks its status and charge, then all its lights flash three times and the charge level is displayed for ten seconds.
- Remove the battery from the printer and check its charge by recharging it.
- Let the battery reach room temperature, then check its charge again.
- If the fault persists, install a new, fully charged battery, and have the old one recycled in accordance with local regulations.
When no charge bar lights up, the battery needs recharging and the printer cannot start. The battery charges with the printer switched off (amber lights) and serves as a backup power supply (UPS) for the printer.

Resetting the Zebra ZD611: restoring factory settings
The options for restoring settings and the button shortcut at start-up.
How do I reset a Zebra ZD611 to factory settings?
Applies to: printer settings, network print server, last saved configuration.
Short answer: The simplest method: hold FEED and PAUSE down while powering on to restore the printer's factory defaults. With the touch display, the Restore Defaults setting also offers PRINTER, NETWORK or LAST SAVED.
Likely cause
Zebra points out that a restore is a reset: all manually changed settings will have to be redone.
Official procedure for restoring factory settings
- Using the buttons: hold FEED and PAUSE down while powering on; the printer settings return to factory values.
- From the Restore Defaults setting on the touch display, PRINTER restores all printer settings except the network settings (ZPL command ^JUF).
- NETWORK resets the wired or wireless print server (^JUN); on Wi-Fi, the printer then re-associates with its network.
- LAST SAVED reloads the last permanently saved configuration (^JUR).
- The same actions are available in the printer's web pages: Restore Default Configuration, Reset Print Server and Restore Saved Configuration.
The “Onboard Printer Tools” chapter of the ZD611 guides also describes self-tests started by button combinations and the use of the reset button; these procedures are not detailed in this guide.

Zebra ZD611R RFID: calibrating and testing label encoding
The ZD611R encodes UHF RFID labels; Zebra describes an RFID calibration separate from media calibration, and a read/write test.
How do I calibrate RFID encoding on a Zebra ZD611R (RFID Calibrate)?
Applies to: ZD611R, each time RFID media is installed or changed.
Short answer: RFID calibration (RFID Calibrate) is separate from media calibration: the ZD611R feeds the media, locates the chip position and selects the programming position, the antenna element and the read/write power. Run it after media calibration, leaving the neighbouring labels in place.
Likely cause
Zebra specifies that media or ribbon calibration does not replace RFID label calibration, and vice versa. This calibration determines the best RFID settings for the media in use.
Official RFID calibration procedure
- Load the RFID media.
- Calibrate the printer for the media (and the ribbon), then close the printhead.
- Feed at least one label, so that RFID calibration starts from the correct position.
- Leave in place the labels (transponders) just before and just after the one being calibrated: this lets the printer keep settings that do not accidentally encode the neighbouring label.
- Leave a length of media protruding at the front of the printer for backfeed during the procedure.
- Run RFID Calibrate from the RFID menu, or with the ZPL command ^HR or the SGD command rfid.tag.calibrate.
The Zebra RFID programming guide (RFID Programming Guide 3) details these commands.

How do I check that my Zebra ZD611R is reading and encoding an RFID label correctly?
Applies to: ZD611R. Tool: RFID Test in the RFID menu.
Short answer: The RFID test makes the ZD611R read and then write the chip of a label, without moving the media. Place the label with its chip over the antenna, touch Start and read the result on the display.
Likely cause
According to Zebra, this test checks that the RFID subsystem is working (reading and writing), independently of printing. The ZD611R supports UHF EPC Gen 2 V2, ISO/IEC 18000-63 and RAIN RFID labels.
What to do
- Position the RFID label so that its transponder is over the RFID antenna array.
- In the RFID menu on the touch display, open RFID Test and touch Start.
- Read the read and write results shown on the display.
- After changing the RFID media, also run RFID calibration (see the RFID Calibrate entry).
The test can also be controlled with the SGD commands rfid.tag.test.content and rfid.tag.test.execute.

Zebra ZD611 troubleshooting: frequently asked questions
How do I calibrate a Zebra ZD611?
With the printer ready and the STATUS light solid green, press PAUSE and CANCEL together for two seconds, then release. The ZD611 measures a few labels, sets its detection levels and returns to solid green. The media must be loaded and the movable sensor set for its type before you start SmartCal. See the detailed entry.
How do I perform a manual calibration on a Zebra ZD611?
With media loaded, hold PAUSE for two seconds: all lights flash yellow, then STATUS stays solid yellow on the Manual Media Calibration mode. Press PAUSE to start it, lay the liner without labels over the platen roller, press PAUSE, place a label over the sensor and press PAUSE again. The printer measures several labels and returns to the ready state. See the detailed entry.
Why does my Zebra ZD611 show Media/Labels Out with a roll loaded?
The ZD611 can no longer see any media: missing label on the roll, movable sensor badly positioned or dirty, or a non-continuous setting with continuous media. Advance to the next label and press PAUSE, then check and clean the movable sensor. If the sensor still detects nothing after a firmware update, Zebra asks you to call a technician. See the detailed entry.
How do I clean the printhead on a Zebra ZD611?
Open the printer, remove the ribbon if there is one, then wipe a new cleaning pen across the dark area of the printhead, from the middle outwards. Wait one minute before closing. Do not touch the hot printhead, and follow anti-static precautions. See the detailed entry.
What should I do when a Zebra ZD611 shows Cut Error?
Switch off the printer by holding the power button for 5 seconds, wait until it has shut down completely and switch it back on. If the error does not clear, contact a technician: the cutter contains no operator-serviceable parts, and you must neither remove its cover nor insert any object into it. See the detailed entry.
Why is the STATUS light on my Zebra ZD611 slowly flashing green?
The printer is in Energy Star low-power mode, activated by a brief press of the power button: only the STATUS light remains active, slowly turning on and off. Holding the button for 4 to 9 seconds switches the printer off completely. See the detailed entry.
How do I reset a Zebra ZD611 to factory defaults?
Hold FEED and PAUSE down while powering on to restore the printer's factory defaults. With the touch display, the Restore Defaults setting offers PRINTER, NETWORK or LAST SAVED. All manually changed settings will then have to be redone. See the detailed entry.
