Zebra ZT510 troubleshooting guide: errors, faults and fixes

Request a repair Printable versionPDF · 668 KB

Phone support, repair and express exchange by TIMCOD technicians. The request form is in French.

In brief. The Zebra ZT510 is an industrial label printer that prints by thermal transfer or direct thermal, at 203 or 300 dpi. It reports its alerts through a control display and five lights (STATUS, PAUSE, DATA, SUPPLIES, NETWORK). According to the Zebra guide, the most common faults come from incorrectly loaded media or ribbon, a calibration that needs redoing, a dirty printhead or unevenly distributed printhead pressure. This guide covers every documented alert and the official calibration, adjustment and maintenance procedures. Click a question to open its entry.

  • An alert is displayed or a light is on (MEDIA OUT, RIBBON OUT, red STATUS…): find the combination of lights in the lookup table and open the matching entry.
  • No alert, but the print is poor: start with calibration, then the ribbon and print quality entries (printhead cleaning, darkness, lever pressure).
  • The problem keeps coming back: the preventive maintenance section explains how it reduces this type of fault.

The lights come from the “Alerts and Error Messages” and “Meaning of Indicator Lights” pages of the Zebra ZT510 guide. In the online version consulted, the exact label shown on the display only appears as an image; only MEDIA OUT - LOAD MEDIA and RIBBON OUT are written out in full in the guide. A dash means that the page consulted does not specify the state of the lights.

Zebra ZT510 alerts: causes and solutions

This section covers the ZT510 alerts relating to the media, the ribbon, printhead temperature and memory; the unrecognised printhead, cutter and USB port alerts are dealt with in their own sections. For each one: the short answer, the cause, the steps to take and, where the guide provides for it, when to hand over to a technician.

Why does my Zebra ZT510 report the printhead as open when it is closed?

Printhead open alert · Lights: STATUS solid red, PAUSE solid yellow.

Short answer: According to Zebra, either the printhead is not completely closed, or the head-open sensor is malfunctioning. Close the printhead until it locks; if the alert stays on the display, the guide provides for the sensor to be replaced by a technician.

Likely cause

The ZT510 alerts table gives two causes: a printhead that has not been closed properly, or a faulty head-open sensor.

Caution: Zebra warns that the printhead can be hot enough to cause severe burns. Let it cool before touching it.

What to do

  1. Raise the printhead release lever, then lower it until it locks the printhead in place.
  2. Check the lights: in the ready state, only STATUS is on, solid green.
  3. If STATUS red and PAUSE yellow stay on even though the printhead is locked, the head-open sensor is at fault.

When to call a technician: if the alert persists with the printhead locked, Zebra leaves the replacement of the head-open sensor to a technician.

The same combination of lights (STATUS red, PAUSE yellow) also indicates a cutter error: see the cutter entry.

Why does my Zebra ZT510 show “MEDIA OUT” when labels are loaded?

Message: MEDIA OUT - LOAD MEDIA · Lights: STATUS solid red, SUPPLIES solid red.

Short answer: The media is missing or incorrectly loaded, the media sensor is incorrectly positioned, or the printer expects separate labels when continuous media is loaded. Reload the roll, check the sensor and the MEDIA TYPE setting, then calibrate.

Likely cause

Zebra cites three causes: media not loaded or incorrectly loaded, media sensor misaligned, printer set for non-continuous media when continuous media is in place. The PDF guide adds that this message, with labels loaded, means that the printer cannot find the start of the labels: the transmissive sensors must then be repositioned.

What to do

  1. Reload the media following the loading procedure for your mode (tear-off, peel-off, rewind or cutter).
  2. Check the position of the media sensor.
  3. In the SETTINGS menu, check MEDIA TYPE: CONTINUOUS, GAP/NOTCH or MARK. Install the intended media or adapt the setting to the media loaded.
  4. Calibrate the printer (see the calibration entry).
  5. If the message comes back while the labels are in place, adjust the transmissive sensors: remove the ribbon, slide the upper sensor (its eye is just below the head of the adjusting screw) to the required position, then bring the lower sensor, located under the rear roller, exactly beneath the upper sensor, leaving a little slack in the wires.
  6. With notched or punched media, place the sensor directly above the notch or hole.

If MEDIA TYPE is set to CONTINUOUS, the guide states that the label format must contain a label length.

Why does my Zebra ZT510 show “RIBBON OUT” when the ribbon is installed?

Message: RIBBON OUT · Lights: STATUS solid red, SUPPLIES flashing.

Short answer: In thermal transfer mode, the printer does not see the ribbon: ribbon missing or incorrectly loaded, sensor blocked by the media, detection threshold too high, or print mode unsuitable for direct thermal media. Reload the ribbon, then calibrate the sensors.

Likely cause

The alerts table lists: ribbon not loaded, incorrectly loaded or not detected by the sensor; media blocking the ribbon sensor; ribbon correctly loaded but “ribbon out” threshold set too high; direct thermal media loaded while the printer is in thermal transfer mode. The loading procedures in the PDF guide warn that incorrectly threaded media can block the ribbon sensor and cause a false RIBBON OUT error.

What to do

  1. Reload the ribbon following the “Loading the Ribbon” procedure in the guide, then check the media path.
  2. Calibrate the ribbon and media sensors (see the calibration entry).
  3. If the ribbon is correctly loaded, print a sensor profile (SENSOR PROFILE option of PRINT INFORMATION). If the “ribbon out” threshold appears above the detected ribbon line, calibrate again or reload the defaults (LOAD DEFAULTS).
  4. If your labels are direct thermal, set PRINT METHOD to DIRECT THERMAL (SETTINGS menu).

The colour of the flashing SUPPLIES light differs depending on the Zebra page: red in “Meaning of Indicator Lights”, yellow in the “Alerts and Error Messages” table.

Why does my Zebra ZT510 report a ribbon when I am printing in direct thermal mode?

Ribbon installed in direct thermal mode alert · Lights: STATUS solid yellow, SUPPLIES flashing yellow.

Short answer: A ribbon is in place while the printer is set to direct thermal, a mode that does not use ribbon. With direct thermal labels, remove the ribbon: according to Zebra, this alert does not prevent printing. With thermal transfer labels, switch to THERMAL TRANS mode.

Likely cause

Ribbon loaded, printer set to DIRECT THERMAL.

What to do

  1. Direct thermal labels: remove the ribbon.
  2. Thermal transfer labels: in the SETTINGS menu, set PRINT METHOD to THERMAL TRANS.
  3. If you are unsure about your media, carry out the scratch test described in the “When to Use Ribbon” section of the guide.

Why does my Zebra ZT510 stop because the printhead is too hot?

Printhead overheating alert · Light: STATUS solid yellow.

Short answer: The printhead has exceeded its operating temperature. Let the printer cool down: printing resumes by itself when the printhead returns to an acceptable temperature. If the alert comes back, move the printer or lower the print speed.

Likely cause

Printhead overheating.

Caution: Zebra warns that the printhead can be hot enough to cause severe burns. Let it cool before touching it.

What to do

  1. Let the printer cool down; printing resumes automatically.
  2. If the alert persists, install the printer in a different location.
  3. Lower the print speed (PRINT SPEED, SETTINGS menu).

A solid yellow STATUS light is also used for an incorrectly connected printhead cable or a faulty thermistor; in that case the display alternates between several messages (see the thermistor entry).

What does a flashing yellow STATUS light mean on my Zebra ZT510?

Light: STATUS flashing yellow.

Short answer: According to Zebra, the printhead is too cold, or the power supply or main logic board is overheating. If the printhead is approaching its lower limit, keep printing while it warms up; if the alert persists, the room is probably too cold.

Likely cause

The indicator lights page associates this flashing with three cases: printhead too cold, power supply overheating, main logic board overheating. For a cold printhead, the alerts table cites a temperature close to the lower operating limit, an incorrectly connected printhead data cable or a faulty printhead thermistor.

Caution: Zebra warns that the printhead can be hot enough to cause severe burns. Let it cool before touching it.

What to do

  1. Keep printing while the printhead reaches its operating temperature.
  2. If the alert persists, move the printer to a warmer room.
  3. If the ambient temperature is not the cause, have the printhead data cable and the thermistor checked.

When to call a technician: if the alert persists in a room at a moderate temperature, Zebra leaves it to a technician to reconnect the printhead data cable, or to replace the printhead if the thermistor is faulty.

Why does my Zebra ZT510 report a lack of memory?

Insufficient memory alert · Lights: not specified by the guide.

Short answer: The printer's memory is not sufficient for the requested function. Simplify the label format or the settings, for example by setting the print width to the actual width of the label, and check that the data is not being sent to a device that is not present.

Likely cause

Not enough memory to carry out the requested function.

What to do

  1. Reduce memory usage by adjusting the label format or the printer settings.
  2. Set PRINT WIDTH to the actual width of the label rather than the default value.
  3. Check that the data is not being directed to a device that is not installed or is unavailable.

When to call a technician: if the lack of memory persists after these adjustments, Zebra advises calling a technician.

Calibration: my Zebra ZT510 skips labels or prints out of position

These entries cover the official calibration procedure for the ribbon and media sensors, and the causes cited by Zebra when automatic calibration fails or the image drifts.

How do I calibrate a Zebra ZT510 that is skipping labels?

Symptoms: skipped labels, incorrectly positioned printing, start of label incorrectly detected.

Short answer: Run the ribbon and media sensor calibration: with the printer ready, press and hold PAUSE and CANCEL for 2 seconds, or choose MEDIA/RIBBON CAL in the TOOLS menu. The media is first calibrated on the liner alone, without ribbon, then you reload the labels and ribbon.

Likely cause

According to the “Printing Issues” table, an uncalibrated printer causes positioning errors and skipped labels. An incorrect label format gives the same symptom and must be checked.

Caution: Zebra warns that the printhead can be hot enough to cause severe burns. Let it cool before touching it.

Official calibration procedure

  1. With the printer in the ready state, start calibration: hold PAUSE + CANCEL for 2 seconds, or select MEDIA/RIBBON CAL in the TOOLS menu and choose START with RIGHT SELECT. STATUS and SUPPLIES flash yellow once, then PAUSE flashes yellow.
  2. Open the printhead assembly by raising the printhead release lever.
  3. Pull approximately 203 mm (8 inches) of media out of the printer.
  4. Remove the labels from this length so that only the liner remains.
  5. Pull the media back into the printer so that only the liner is in the sensor.
  6. Remove the ribbon, if there is one.
  7. Lower the lever until the printhead locks.
  8. Press PAUSE to calibrate the media: PAUSE goes off and SUPPLIES flashes. At the end, SUPPLIES stops flashing and PAUSE flashes yellow.
  9. Open the printhead again, pull the media forward until a label is under the sensors, then reload the ribbon if you use one.
  10. Lock the printhead, close the media cover, then press PAUSE to allow printing.

Zebra asks you to follow all the steps in order, even if only one sensor needs adjusting. Pressing and holding CANCEL stops calibration at any step. The guide states that MEDIA/RIBBON CAL cannot be started from the printer's web pages.

Why does automatic calibration fail on my Zebra ZT510?

Symptom: automatic calibration failure (“Auto Calibrate failed” in the guide).

Short answer: According to Zebra, the media or ribbon is incorrectly loaded, the sensors are dirty or incorrectly positioned, or the media type is set incorrectly. Check the loading, clean the sensors, correct MEDIA TYPE, then run a manual calibration.

Likely cause

The “Miscellaneous Issues” table lists: media or ribbon incorrectly loaded; sensors not detecting the media or ribbon; dirty or incorrectly positioned sensors; media type set incorrectly; separate labels treated as continuous media because the printer has not been calibrated for this media; printer configured for continuous media.

What to do

  1. Check the ribbon and media loading (“Loading the Ribbon” and “Load the Media” procedures).
  2. Clean the media and ribbon sensors (Zebra recommends blowing them clean with air), then check their position.
  3. Set MEDIA TYPE to the actual type: GAP/NOTCH, CONTINUOUS or MARK.
  4. Run a manual calibration (see the calibration entry).

The POWER UP ACTION and HEAD CLOSE ACTION settings (TOOLS menu) determine what the printer does at power-up and when the printhead is closed: CALIBRATE, FEED, LENGTH, NO MOTION or SHORT CAL.

Why does the printing on my Zebra ZT510 shift vertically from one label to the next?

Symptoms: vertical image drift, loss of top-of-label registration, one to three labels printed incorrectly.

Short answer: Zebra cites first a missing or incorrect calibration, a dirty platen roller and a media type set incorrectly. Set MEDIA TYPE, clean the printhead and the platen roller, then recalibrate.

Likely cause

The “Printing Issues” table lists: separate labels used in continuous mode, media sensor incorrectly calibrated, dirty platen roller, pressure levers (toggles) set incorrectly, media or ribbon incorrectly loaded, media guides incorrectly positioned, media out of specification.

What to do

  1. Set MEDIA TYPE to match your media (GAP/NOTCH, CONTINUOUS or MARK), then calibrate (see the calibration entry).
  2. Clean the printhead and the platen roller.
  3. Reload the media and the ribbon, and position the media guides correctly.
  4. Adjust the pressure of the printhead levers (see the printhead pressure entry).
  5. Check the media: according to Zebra, the gaps or notches between labels must measure 2 to 4 mm and be evenly spaced.

Ribbon problems on the Zebra ZT510: wrinkling, breakage, end of ribbon

Ribbon wrinkled, melted, incorrectly detected or difficult to remove from the spindle: the causes and procedures from the “Ribbon Issues” table and the PDF guide.

Why is the ribbon on my Zebra ZT510 wrinkling?

Symptoms: wrinkled ribbon, fine grey diagonal lines on blank labels, unprinted streaks.

Short answer: According to Zebra, ribbon wrinkling comes from incorrect loading, an unsuitable burn temperature, unevenly distributed printhead pressure or media that moves sideways. Reload the ribbon, lower the darkness to the minimum needed and balance the pressure of the two levers.

Likely cause

The “Ribbon Issues” table lists: ribbon incorrectly loaded, incorrect burn temperature, incorrect or uneven printhead pressure, media “walking” from side to side, printhead or platen roller incorrectly installed.

What to do

  1. Reload the ribbon (“Loading the Ribbon” procedure).
  2. Set DARKNESS to the lowest value that gives good print; the “Evaluating Barcode Quality” section helps you find this setting.
  3. Set the printhead pressure to the minimum that ensures good quality, first repositioning the levers (toggles) if the media or ribbon slips.
  4. Adjust the media guide so that it holds the media without play.

When to call a technician: if the media keeps moving sideways after the guide has been adjusted, or if the printhead or platen roller appear to be incorrectly installed, the Zebra guide refers you to a technician.

Why does the ribbon on my Zebra ZT510 break or melt during printing?

Symptoms: ribbon pierced, melted or broken.

Short answer: According to Zebra, the darkness is set too high, or the ribbon is coated on the wrong side for this printer. Lower DARKNESS, clean the printhead, and replace the ribbon if it is not coated on the right side.

Likely cause

Two causes in the “Ribbon Issues” table: darkness too high; ribbon whose coated side is not suitable for this printer.

What to do

  1. Lower DARKNESS (range 0.0 to 30.0, SETTINGS menu).
  2. Clean the printhead thoroughly (see the cleaning entry).
  3. Check the coated side of the ribbon (“Coated Side of Ribbon” section of the guide, with its adhesive and scratch tests) and replace it if necessary.

The guide points out that excessive darkness can also blur the image, hinder barcode reading, pierce the ribbon and wear the printhead faster.

Why doesn't my Zebra ZT510 stop at the end of the ribbon?

Symptoms: the end of the ribbon is not detected, or the printer reports no ribbon when it is loaded.

Short answer: The printer was calibrated without ribbon, with incorrectly loaded ribbon, or not for the label and ribbon combination in use. Reload the ribbon so that it passes in front of the sensor, then recalibrate.

Likely cause

Calibration carried out without ribbon or with incorrectly loaded ribbon; printer not calibrated for the label and ribbon in use.

What to do

  1. Reload the ribbon so that the ribbon sensor can see it: under the printhead, it must go all the way back, close to the printer's inner wall (firewall).
  2. Calibrate the ribbon and media sensors (see the calibration entry).

How do I remove used ribbon from the take-up spindle on a Zebra ZT510?

Symptoms: the used ribbon will not come off the take-up spindle.

Short answer: Hold the take-up spindle, turn the ribbon release knob to the left as far as it will go to fold down the clamping bars, then slide the used ribbon off the spindle. If ribbon remains, cut it before the spindle, never on the spindle.

Likely cause

The spindle release bars grip the used ribbon. Zebra asks you to empty the spindle at every ribbon change, and with every new roll of media if the ribbon is half the width of the printhead or less, to avoid uneven pressure on these bars.

Caution: Do not cut the ribbon directly on the take-up spindle: Zebra warns that the spindle may be damaged.

Official procedure

  1. If the ribbon has not run out, cut or break it before the take-up spindle.
  2. Holding the take-up spindle, turn the ribbon release knob to the left as far as it will go: the release bars lower and loosen their grip on the ribbon.
  3. If possible, turn the spindle one full turn to the right to loosen the ribbon.
  4. Slide the used ribbon off the spindle and discard it.

Several of these faults involve the ribbon or labels used. TIMCOD, Zebra reseller, supplies labels, thermal transfer ribbons and printheads for thermal printers (pages in French).

Zebra ZT510 print quality: faded or uneven print, unreadable barcodes

Darkness, speed, printhead pressure and printhead cleanliness: the settings Zebra recommends checking before replacing parts.

Why is my Zebra ZT510 printing too light or too dark?

Symptoms: print too light or too dark over the whole label, smudging, inconsistent quality.

Short answer: Zebra cites a dirty printhead, incorrectly set darkness or speed, unsuitable printhead pressure and a poorly chosen label and ribbon combination. Clean the printhead and the platen roller, then find the lowest darkness and speed that give a sharp print.

Likely cause

The “Printing Issues” table lists: speed too high, darkness too high, dirty printhead, incorrect or uneven printhead pressure, unsuitable label and ribbon combination, media or ribbon not designed for high speed (also responsible for smudging), ribbon used with direct thermal media.

Caution: Zebra warns that the printhead can be hot enough to cause severe burns. Let it cool before touching it. Zebra accepts no liability for damage caused by cleaning products.

What to do

  1. Clean the printhead and the platen roller with solvent: Zebra recommends its preventive maintenance kit (part no. 47362) or, failing that, a lint-free cloth moistened with 99.7% isopropyl alcohol.
  2. Set DARKNESS (SETTINGS menu) to the lowest value that gives good quality; the FEED Self Test helps you find this setting.
  3. Lower PRINT SPEED: according to the guide, a slower speed generally improves quality (2 to 12 ips at 203 dpi, 2 to 10 ips at 300 dpi).
  4. Set the printhead pressure to the minimum that gives a good print (see the printhead pressure entry).
  5. If the fault persists, try different media or a different ribbon, designed for high speed if you print fast. With direct thermal media, do not use ribbon.

Cleaning frequency recommended by Zebra for the printhead, the platen roller and the media and ribbon paths: after every roll of media in direct thermal mode (or 500 feet, about 150 m, of fanfold media), after every roll of ribbon in thermal transfer mode. Frequent cleaning protects the printhead's ceramic coating, which is worn by the abrasion of the media and ribbon.

Why does my Zebra ZT510 print lighter on one side of the label?

Symptoms: faded print on the left or right, media slipping or shifting sideways.

Short answer: The pressure of the two printhead levers (toggles) is unevenly distributed or their position is incorrect. The Zebra guide tells you which lever to tighten or loosen depending on the side that prints faintly or the direction of the shift.

Likely cause

Uneven printhead pressure or incorrectly positioned levers, according to the “Printing Issues” tables and the pressure adjustment chapter of the guide.

What to do

  1. If the media or ribbon slips, reposition the levers first, then adjust the pressure if necessary.
  2. Faded print on the left side: increase the pressure of the inner lever.
  3. Faded print on the right side: increase the pressure of the outer lever.
  4. Media moving to the left: increase the pressure of the outer lever or reduce that of the inner lever. To the right: do the opposite.
  5. If the media needs more pressure to print well, increase the pressure of both levers; if it needs less, reduce it on both.

Zebra recommends the lowest pressure that gives good quality: excessive pressure wears the printhead prematurely.

Why won't barcodes printed by my Zebra ZT510 scan?

Symptom: barcode not read by the scanner.

Short answer: The barcode is out of specification because the print is too light or too dark, or the blank margin around the barcode is insufficient. Adjust darkness and speed, and leave at least 3.2 mm of blank space around the barcode.

Likely cause

Print too light or too dark; insufficient blank space around the barcode.

What to do

  1. Follow the “Evaluating Barcode Quality” procedure in the guide, then adjust DARKNESS or PRINT SPEED.
  2. Leave at least 3.2 mm (1/8 inch) between the barcode and other printed areas, and also between the barcode and the edge of the label.

Zebra ZT510 printhead: printhead not recognised, thermistor, white streaks

These cases concern the printhead itself. According to the Zebra guide, several of them are a job for a technician.

Why are the STATUS, PAUSE and DATA lights on my Zebra ZT510 red after a printhead change?

Lights: STATUS, PAUSE and DATA solid red (non-genuine printhead); STATUS flashing red (printhead resolution unreadable).

Short answer: The installed printhead is not a genuine Zebra printhead. Install a genuine Zebra printhead to resume printing. A flashing red STATUS light indicates another case: the printer cannot read the printhead's resolution (dpi).

Likely cause

Printhead replaced with one that is not genuine Zebra (three solid red lights); printhead resolution cannot be read (STATUS flashing red).

Caution: Zebra warns that the printhead can be hot enough to cause severe burns. Let it cool before touching it.

What to do

  1. Install a genuine Zebra printhead.
  2. If only STATUS is flashing red, the printer cannot read the printhead's resolution: the indicator lights page gives no procedure for this case.

Why does the display on my Zebra ZT510 alternate between several printhead messages?

Light: STATUS solid yellow; the display shows a printhead message or alternates between several.

Short answer: According to Zebra, the printhead data or power cable is incorrectly connected, or the printhead thermistor is faulty. Both cases are dealt with by a technician: reconnecting the cable or replacing the printhead.

Likely cause

Printhead data or power cable incorrectly connected; faulty printhead thermistor.

Caution: Zebra warns that the printhead can be hot enough to cause severe burns. Let it cool before touching it.

What to do

  1. Let the printhead cool.
  2. Have a technician reconnect the printhead correctly.
  3. If the thermistor is faulty, the printhead needs replacing.

When to call a technician: if the display alternates between printhead messages, Zebra leaves it to the technician to reconnect the printhead, or to replace it if the thermistor is faulty.

Why does my Zebra ZT510 leave long unprinted streaks on several labels?

Symptoms: unprinted bands in the feed direction, repeated from one label to the next.

Short answer: Zebra cites a damaged print element or wrinkled ribbon. Check the ribbon first; if the streaks stay in the same place with the ribbon properly tensioned, the printhead element is at fault and the guide refers you to a technician.

Likely cause

Damaged printhead print element; wrinkled ribbon.

What to do

  1. Check the ribbon and deal with any wrinkling (see the ribbon wrinkling entry).
  2. If an element is damaged, call in a technician.

When to call a technician: damaged print element: Zebra asks you to call a technician.

Zebra ZT510 connection: nothing prints, network, USB, serial link

DATA light, NETWORK light, serial link, IP address and USB host port: the communication causes documented by Zebra for the ZT510.

Why doesn't my Zebra ZT510 print anything when I send a label?

Symptoms: label format not recognised; DATA light off, or DATA flashing with no printing.

Short answer: If the DATA light does not flash, the communication settings are wrong. If it flashes without printing anything, the printer's prefix and delimiter characters do not match the format, or the data sent is incorrect.

Likely cause

DATA off: incorrect communication settings. DATA flashing: prefix and delimiter characters different from those in the format, or incorrect data.

What to do

  1. DATA off: check the communication settings in the driver or software.
  2. On a serial link: check the serial port settings, use a null modem cable or adapter, and match the printer's handshake protocol to the computer's.
  3. DATA flashing: compare CONTROL CHAR and DELIMITER CHAR with the characters in the label format.
  4. Check that the computer's communication settings match the printer's, then check the label format.

Serial link: why does my Zebra ZT510 skip or distort the image after a few labels?

Symptoms: a few correct labels, then image skipped, misplaced, incomplete or distorted.

Short answer: The serial communication settings are incorrect. Check that flow control is identical on both sides, that the cable length meets the specifications and that the driver is set correctly.

Likely cause

Incorrect serial communication settings.

What to do

  1. Set the same flow control on the printer and the computer.
  2. Check the length of the communication cable against the “General Specifications” in the guide.
  3. Check the communication settings in the driver or software.

What does the red NETWORK light mean on my Zebra ZT510?

Light: NETWORK solid red (Ethernet or Wi-Fi).

Short answer: A solid red NETWORK light indicates an Ethernet or Wi-Fi error: the printer is not on the network. Solid green means the link is established; flashing green means the Wi-Fi signal is weak.

Likely cause

Ethernet error or WLAN error: printer not connected to the network.

What to do

  1. Ethernet: NETWORK off = no link; solid green = 100Base-T link; solid yellow = 10Base-T link; solid red = error.
  2. Wi-Fi: at power-up, NETWORK goes from off to flashing red (association) then flashing yellow (authentication). Solid green = connected with a good signal, flashing green = weak signal, solid red = error.
  3. Set up the connection again using the “Connecting to Your Network through the Printer's Ethernet Port” or “Connecting the Printer to Your Wireless Network” procedures in the guide.
  4. After changing network settings, apply them with RESET NETWORK. LOAD DEFAULTS > NETWORK resets the print server.

Why does my Zebra ZT510 change IP address after being switched off?

Symptom: new IP address assigned by the print server after a period switched off.

Short answer: The network settings allow the address to be reassigned. To keep the same address, set the IP protocol to PERMANENT, enter the address, subnet mask and gateway, then confirm with RESET NETWORK.

Likely cause

Network settings that allow the address to be reassigned.

Assign a fixed IP address (Zebra procedure)

  1. Note down the IP address, subnet mask and gateway to assign to the wired print server, the wireless one or both.
  2. Set WIRED IP PROTOCOL or WLAN IP PROTOCOL to PERMANENT.
  3. Enter the IP address, subnet mask and gateway of the print server concerned.
  4. Save with RESET NETWORK.

Why doesn't my Zebra ZT510 recognise my USB stick?

Symptoms: USB device ignored, files unreadable, USB host port disabled alert.

Short answer: The USB host port may be disabled, the stick is larger than 1 TB, or the device needs its own power supply. Accept use of the device (YES) if the alert appears, use a stick of 1 TB or less, or connect the device to a power supply.

Likely cause

USB host port disabled while a device is connected (alert); stick larger than 1 TB; device requiring an external power supply.

What to do

  1. If the USB host port disabled alert appears, select YES to use the device; the guide also gives an SGD command (usb.host.lock_out parameter).
  2. Use a USB stick of 1 TB or less.
  3. Connect the device to a working power supply if it needs one.

Why are the settings on my Zebra ZT510 not taking effect?

Symptoms: change has no effect, or setting has reverted to its previous value.

Short answer: According to Zebra, a setting is set incorrectly, a firmware command is preventing it from being changed, or a command is resetting it to its previous value. Correct the setting, then switch the printer off and on again; otherwise, consult the Zebra programming guide.

Likely cause

Settings set incorrectly; firmware command that prevents the change; firmware command that restores the previous setting.

What to do

  1. Check and correct the settings, then switch the printer off (O) and on again (I).
  2. If a firmware command is blocking the setting, refer to the “Programming Guide for ZPL, ZBI, Set-Get-Do, Mirror, and WML”.

When to call a technician: if a setting keeps reverting to its previous value, Zebra suggests a faulty main logic board and refers you to a technician.

Zebra ZT510 troubleshooting: frequently asked questions

How do I calibrate a Zebra ZT510?

With the printer ready, press and hold PAUSE and CANCEL for 2 seconds, or choose MEDIA/RIBBON CAL in the TOOLS menu. Open the printhead, leave only the liner in the sensor, remove the ribbon, close the printhead and press PAUSE. Then reload a label under the sensors and the ribbon, close the printhead, then press PAUSE again. See the detailed entry.

Why does my Zebra ZT510 show “MEDIA OUT” with labels loaded?

According to Zebra, the media is incorrectly loaded, the media sensor is incorrectly positioned or the media type is set incorrectly. Reload the roll, check MEDIA TYPE and calibrate. If the message persists, adjust the position of the transmissive sensors; with notched or punched media, the sensor must be directly above the notch or hole. See the detailed entry.

What should I do if my Zebra ZT510 shows “RIBBON OUT” when the ribbon is in place?

Reload the ribbon and calibrate the sensors. If the problem continues, print a sensor profile: a detection threshold set too high is corrected by a new calibration or by LOAD DEFAULTS. With direct thermal labels, set PRINT METHOD to DIRECT THERMAL. See the detailed entry.

How do I clean the printhead on a Zebra ZT510?

Zebra recommends its preventive maintenance kit or a lint-free cloth moistened with 99.7% isopropyl alcohol. Clean the printhead and the platen roller after every roll of media in direct thermal mode, or after every roll of ribbon in thermal transfer mode. Let the printhead cool before touching it. See the detailed entry.

Why does my Zebra ZT510 print lighter on one side?

The pressure of the two printhead levers is unevenly distributed. If the left side is faded, increase the pressure of the inner lever; if it is the right side, that of the outer lever. Zebra advises the lowest pressure that gives good quality. See the detailed entry.

How do I reset a Zebra ZT510?

In the TOOLS menu, LOAD DEFAULTS offers FACTORY (factory settings other than the network settings) and LAST SAVED (last saved configuration). The NETWORK option resets the print server. At power-up, FEED + PAUSE loads the factory values and CANCEL + PAUSE the network values. See the detailed entry.

What do a red STATUS light and a yellow PAUSE light mean on a Zebra ZT510?

This combination indicates either an open printhead or a cutter error. First close the printhead until it locks. If the printer has a cutter, switch it off, unplug it and inspect the cutter module. See the detailed entry.

How do I set a Zebra ZT510 back to French?

Open the LANGUAGE menu and press OK. Scroll through the languages with the up and down arrows: each one is written in its own language. Select Français (French). See the detailed entry.
