Why does my label printer not respond when I send a print job?

Explore preventive maintenance

Scheduled visits to check, clean and adjust your printers and spot worn parts before they fail.

In brief. When a label printer does not respond when you send a print job, either the job is not reaching it or it arrives in a format the printer does not recognise. The manufacturers' guides first cite the cable, the communication settings and the driver, then the printer language and, depending on the connection, the Ethernet network, Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. Check whether the data light reacts when you send the job: on Zebra printers, a DATA light that does not change means the data is not arriving, and a light that flashes without printing means the format is not recognised. Also check that the printer is not paused.

Why does a printer not respond when you send a print job? The causes cited by manufacturers

These causes are ranked from the most cited to the rarest in the manufacturers' guides; the entry for your model, in the model-by-model table below, gives the exact procedure.

  1. Cable unplugged, damaged or unsuitableThis is the most frequently cited check. Sato first has you reconnect the interface cable (FX3-LX, CL4NX, CT4-LX), and Brother has you replace it if printing does not resume (TD-4420TN, TJ-4420TN). On a serial connection, Zebra cites a cable that is not a standard DTE or DCE type, is damaged or is too long for the RS-232 standard (ZD420, ZD620, ZD621); Honeywell cites a crossover network cable instead of a straight-through cable on the PD45S.
  2. Wrong port or communication settingsFor Zebra, a DATA light that does not flash when you send a job indicates incorrect communication settings in the driver or software (ZD421, ZT410, ZT510). On a serial connection, the baud rate and the handshake protocol must be identical on both sides: the ZD500R factory values are 9,600 baud, 8 bits, no parity, 1 stop bit, XON/XOFF; Zebra also cites an incorrectly set baud rate on the QLn420 and ZQ630 mobile printers. A wrong port selected in the driver is cited by Zebra for the GK420 and by Brother for the TJ-4420TN.
  3. Driver missing or installed after the USB connectionZebra explains that a printer connected by USB before its driver is installed receives the generic Windows driver and ends up under Unspecified: this is the case described for the ZD410, ZD420, ZD611 and GK420. Honeywell requires its InterDriver driver over USB, even when Windows detects the printer on its own (PC43, PD43, PM23c). Sato has you check the printer name in the driver, then reinstall the driver as administrator (CL4NX, PW4NX).
  4. Format or language not recognisedWhen the DATA light flashes but nothing prints, Zebra states that the data is arriving but the format is not recognised: the printer's command prefix and delimiter differ from those of the format, the format is incorrect or an emulation is active (ZD421, ZD621, ZT411). On the ZQ511 and ZQ620 Plus mobile printers, Zebra cites an invalid label format or command structure. Sato displays error 1017 for an incorrect SBPL command (CL4NX, CL6NX Plus); Brother cites a program that does not send the PRINT command (TJ-4420TN).
  5. Printer not connected to the Ethernet or Wi-Fi networkOn the ZT411 and ZT421, Zebra associates the IP address 0.0.0.0 with an inactive Ethernet connection (cable or network port); on Wi-Fi, the ESSID and the WLAN settings must match the network. The ZD500R obtains its address via DHCP and may get a different one at each start-up, whereas the Windows driver targets a fixed address. Sato has you test the response to a ping and check the IP address and subnet mask (FX3-LX, CL4NX); its errors 1046 and 1047 indicate a failed EAP authentication on Wi-Fi.
  6. Bluetooth link missing or incorrectly configuredOn the Sato FX3-LX, Bluetooth requires an optional kit and must be enabled; on the PW208NX, Sato specifies that it is disabled by default from firmware 3.7.0 if the secure settings were chosen at first start-up. For its QLn420 and ZQ630 mobile printers, Zebra cites a missing or lost radio link. On Windows, Zebra links the Error printing message on a paired ZQ510 to a job sent while the printer was in sleep mode or to a wrong COM port selected in the driver.

What to check, in order

  1. Check that the printer is readyNeither paused nor in an error state: Zebra has you press FEED to take a GK420 out of pause, and Honeywell states that a PC43 or PD43 does not print while the main menu is displayed. On a mobile printer, install a charged battery.
  2. Watch the data light when you send the jobDATA light on the Zebra ZD421, ZD620 or ZT410, Data icon on the ZQ610 Plus and ZQ630 mobile printers, Data light on Brother PocketJet printers. If it does not react, the data is not arriving: look at the cable, the port and the driver. If it flashes but nothing prints, check the format and the language.
  3. Check the cable and the portWith the printer off, reconnect the cable at both ends. Over USB, Sato advises trying another port on the computer and unplugging the other USB devices; Brother advises changing the cable if printing does not resume.
  4. Check the driver and its settingsIn the printer properties, check the selected driver and port, then clear the print queue. If the printer appears under Unspecified, Zebra has you unplug the USB cable, delete this entry, install the Zebra driver, then reconnect. On a serial connection, match the baud rate and the handshake protocol to those of the computer.
  5. On a network or wireless link, check the connectionPrint the network configuration label to read the IP address and run a ping, as Sato requests. On Bluetooth, check that the function is enabled and that the printer is paired. On the Zebra ZT411 and ZT421, a changed network setting only takes effect after a network reset.
  6. Switch to diagnostic mode, then contact supportCommunication diagnostics mode prints everything the printer receives: hold PAUSE and FEED for 2 seconds on the Zebra ZD420 and ZT411, DUMP mode on ZQ mobile printers, dump mode at start-up on the Godex EZ6250i. FE, OE, PE or NE codes indicate communication settings to correct. If nothing changes, Sato and Zebra refer you to their technical support.

Caution: Turn the printer off before connecting or disconnecting a data cable: Zebra requires this for its desktop, industrial and mobile printers, and specifies for the ZT610 and ZT620 that a cable connected while the power is on can damage the printer. Conversely, Sato asks you not to turn off a WS2 or WS4 during a data transmission.

What the documentation recommends, model by model

For 65 models, the manufacturer's documentation describes this symptom. Each row links to the detailed entry in the guide, with the full procedure and its sources.

ModelGuide entryShort answer
Zebra ZT230Why does my Zebra ZT230 not respond when I send a label? If the DATA light does not flash, the communication settings are incorrect (driver, serial port, cable, handshake). If DATA flashes without printing, the printer's prefix and delimiter characters do not match those of the format, or the data sent is incorrect.
Honeywell PM43Why is my Honeywell PM43 paused and no longer printing? On the icon model, a white Pause icon indicates that the printer is paused: press the Print button to resume. On the touch screen model, the printer cannot print while the main menu is open: return to the Ready screen.
Honeywell PF4iWhy does my Honeywell PF4i display “Paused” and stop printing? The print job is paused. According to the Intermec guides, the large button on the front (Print or Feed/Pause depending on the version) pauses a print job, and the Pause key (P) pauses and resumes printing.
Zebra ZT410Why does my Zebra ZT410 print nothing when I send a label? If the DATA light does not flash, the communication parameters are incorrect. If it flashes but nothing prints, the prefix and delimiter characters do not match the format, or the data sent is incorrect.
Toshiba B-852Why does the paper on my Toshiba B-852 not advance, or why does the FEED button cause an error?According to Toshiba, the media is incorrectly loaded or the printer is in an error state. Just after a full reset, FEED also causes an error if the media does not match the default conditions (gap sensor, thermal transfer, 76.2 mm pitch): correct them through the driver or the print command, then press RESTART.
Zebra ZT421Why does my Zebra ZT421 show “Head Over Temp” and stop printing? The printhead is overheating. Let the printer cool down: printing resumes by itself when the printhead elements return to an acceptable temperature. If the error comes back, move the printer or reduce the print speed.
Zebra ZT421Why does my Zebra ZT421 show the IP address “0.0.0.0” and why can't it be reached on the network? On Ethernet, check the cable and the network port at the back of the printer; on Wi-Fi, check the ESSID and the WLAN settings. If necessary, assign a fixed IP address provided by your network administrator (IP protocol set to PERMANENT), then reset the network to apply the changes.

Honeywell PX6iWhy does my Honeywell PX6i show “Printhead too hot” or “Power supply Over temperature”?The printhead or the power supply unit has overheated and must cool down. According to the Honeywell guide, in IPL printing resumes by itself once the printhead has cooled down; in Fingerprint, you have to send the print job again.
Honeywell PX6iWhy does my Honeywell PX6i show “Pause Mode Entered” or “Paused” and no longer print? The print job is paused: this is not a fault. Press Pause to resume printing, or Feed if the display shows “Press Feed”.
Toshiba B-EX4T1Why does the paper on my Toshiba B-EX4T1 not advance, or why does the FEED button cause an error?According to Toshiba, the media is incorrectly loaded or the printer is in an error state. After a full reset, FEED also causes an error if the media does not match the default conditions (gap sensor, thermal transfer, 76.2 mm pitch): correct them through the driver or the print command, then press RESTART.
Zebra S4MWhy is my Zebra S4M not receiving the labels sent by the computer?First check the cable and the interface used: RS-232 serial, IEEE 1284 parallel, USB, or the optional wired or wireless Ethernet print server. While data is being received, the display shows DATA. With a serial connection, the printer parameters must match those of the computer.
Honeywell MP Compact4 Mark IIIWhy does the light on my Honeywell MP Compact4 Mark III stay orange?According to Honeywell, solid orange indicates that the printer is paused or that the presence sensor is blocked; flashing orange, that it is paused or busy. When the printer is paused, a brief press of the control button resumes printing.
Zebra GK420Why does the light on my Zebra GK420 stay solid amber, with the printer no longer printing?According to Zebra, solid amber indicates a power-on self test failure, a memory error or a printhead that needs to cool. Just after power-up, amber for about ten seconds is normal; if it lasts, follow the steps below.
Zebra GK420Why does the light on my Zebra GK420 double-flash green without printing? The printer is paused. Press FEED once to resume printing.
Zebra ZD421Why does my Zebra ZD421 not respond when I send a label, with the DATA light off?The label format was not recognised and no data arrived: according to Zebra, the communication parameters are incorrect. Check the communication settings in the driver or the software and, for a serial connection, the port parameters and the cable.
Zebra ZD421Why does my Zebra ZD421 receive data (DATA light flashing) but print nothing? The data is arriving but the format is not recognised. Zebra gives three causes: different prefix and delimiter characters between the printer and the format, computer communication parameters different from those of the printer, or an incorrect label format.
Sato FX3-LXWhy is the media not feeding in my Sato FX3-LX?First check whether an error message is displayed. If not, open and close the cover, touch [FEED] in offline mode, then reload the media and clear any jam.
Sato FX3-LXWhy does my Sato FX3-LX print nothing after a print job is sent?Check the interface cable and that the printer's interface settings match the computer and the network. Then check the driver (correct driver, correct port) and clear the print queue.
Zebra GX420Why does the light on my Zebra GX420 double-flash green without printing? The printer is paused. Press FEED once: it switches to ready mode (light solid green) and resumes printing.
Zebra GX420Why is the light on my Zebra GX420 flashing green with nothing printing?According to Zebra, flashing green indicates that the printer is receiving data; once the transfer is complete, the light changes to solid green and printing resumes. If nothing comes out, clear the Windows print queue, restart the printer, then check the driver.
Zebra QLn420Why does my Zebra QLn420 print nothing?First print a configuration report to check that the printer is working. If it is, Zebra asks you to check the baud rate, the cable, the radio link or network association, the battery and the label format sent.
Godex MX20Why does the ERROR light on my Godex MX20 come on and printing stop? The ERROR light signals one of the four faults listed in the GoDEX manual: out of paper, cover open, printhead overheating or label sensing error. Correct the cause: the error clears by itself, or press FEED to clear it.
Godex MX20Why won't my Godex MX20 switch on (no lights)?According to the GoDEX manual, first check that the battery is fully charged. Also check that it is properly clipped into its compartment, then press POWER: the POWER light should come on.
Zebra ZQ630Why is my Zebra ZQ630 not printing anything even though it is switched on?According to Zebra, the link with the terminal or computer is most often the cause. Check the cable or the wireless link (Bluetooth, Wi-Fi), the baud rate on a serial connection and the battery; if the label format is in doubt, switch to communications diagnostics mode.
Zebra ZQ630How do I diagnose a communication error on a Zebra ZQ630?Zebra asks you to check the baud rate and replace the cable to the terminal. To see what the printer is actually receiving, print the configuration label and switch to communications diagnostics mode (DUMP), which prints the data received in hexadecimal.
Zebra ZQ511Why is the roll in my Zebra ZQ511 not feeding?Zebra lists three checks: the media cover must be closed and latched, the spindle carrying the roll must not bind, and the label sensor must not be blocked.
Zebra ZQ511Why is my Zebra ZQ511 printing nothing or printing garbled characters?Zebra gives the same checks in both cases: replace the battery, check the cable to the terminal and re-establish the radio link or the association with the wireless network. If nothing prints, also check the label format sent, using communications diagnostics mode.
Zebra ZQ610 PlusWhy is my Zebra ZQ610 Plus not printing anything even though it is switched on?According to Zebra, the link with the host device is most often the cause. Check the cable or the wireless link (Bluetooth, Wi-Fi), the baud rate on a serial connection and the battery; if the label format is in doubt, switch to communications diagnostics mode.
Zebra ZQ610 PlusHow do I diagnose a communication error on a Zebra ZQ610 Plus?Zebra asks you to check the baud rate and replace the cable to the host device. To see what the printer is actually receiving, print the configuration label and switch to communications diagnostics mode (DUMP), which prints the data received in hexadecimal.
Zebra ZQ510Why won't the paper feed on my Zebra ZQ510?Zebra gives three checks: the paper cover must be closed and latched, the core that carries the roll must not bind, and the paper sensor must not be obstructed.
Zebra ZQ510Why does my Zebra ZQ510 print nothing or print garbled characters? For distorted print, Zebra asks you to check the baud rate. If nothing prints, also check the battery, the radio link or the wireless network association, and the label format sent, using communication diagnostics mode (Hex Dump).
Sato PW208NXHow do I resolve “Error 1066 (Paper Jam)” on my Sato PW208NX?The media is jammed or incorrectly loaded. Open the cover, remove the jammed media and reload it correctly, with its leading edge protruding beyond the cutting bar.
Sato PW208NXWhy will my Sato PW208NX not connect via Bluetooth?Check that Bluetooth is enabled ([Interface] > [Bluetooth] > [Enable]): since firmware 3.7.0, it is disabled by default if the secure settings were chosen at first start-up. Then move the printer away from Wi-Fi devices and microwave ovens and from metal obstacles. Error 1050 signals a Bluetooth module that needs repairing.
Zebra ZC100 and ZC300Why has my Zebra ZC300 stopped printing with its power light red?According to Zebra, a solid red power light indicates a critical error, and a red status bar in the driver blocks printing until the error has been corrected. Note the code displayed, find it in the lookup table and apply the matching entry.
Zebra ZD410Why is my Zebra ZD410 connected by USB not recognised by Windows? The USB cable was connected before the Zebra driver was installed: Windows installed a generic driver. Disconnect the cable, remove the Zebra printer listed under “Unspecified”, install the Zebra driver, then reconnect the cable.
Zebra ZD410Why does my Zebra ZD410 print nothing even though the job has been sent (DATA light not flashing)? The data is not reaching the printer. Check the communication settings in the driver or the software; on a serial link, check that the handshake protocol and port settings are identical on both sides and that the cable is compliant.
Zebra ZD411Why does my Zebra ZD411 report “Out Of Memory” with the DATA light flashing amber? The printer no longer has enough memory to save a format, graphic, image or font. Delete unused items from memory or reduce the print area of the label.
Zebra ZD411Why does my Zebra ZD411 refuse to print after the head has been replaced (unauthorised head)? The printer cannot read the head resolution or does not recognise it as a genuine Zebra head. Check how the head is fitted and install a genuine Zebra head to resume printing.
Zebra ZD420Zebra ZD420 cannot be found in Windows after connecting it by USB: what should I do?Windows has probably installed its generic driver because the ZD420 was connected before the Zebra driver. Disconnect the USB cable, remove the Zebra entries classified under “Unspecified”, install the latest Zebra driver, then reconnect.
Zebra ZD420My Zebra ZD420 prints nothing or produces distorted labels from the computer: how do I diagnose it?If DATA does not flash when data is sent, the data is not arriving: check the communication settings and the serial cable. If a few labels come out and then deteriorate, compare the serial settings and the prefix and delimiter characters, and run the communication diagnostics test.
Zebra ZD500RHow do I connect my Zebra ZD500R to a Windows PC without driver errors?Zebra asks you to install Zebra Setup Utilities before switching on a printer connected to the PC: the utility tells you when to power it on. Connect the interface cables with the power switch off, using shielded cables and a certified USB cable.
Zebra ZD500RWhy won't my Zebra ZD500R communicate over an RS-232 serial connection? The serial settings of the printer and the computer must be identical, especially the speed and flow control. Factory values: 9,600 baud, 8 bits, no parity, 1 stop bit, XON/XOFF; use a DB-9 null modem (crossover) cable.
Zebra ZD510-HCWhy does the orange ring on my Zebra ZD510-HC go off twice and then stay on (Memory Storage Exception)? The printer has encountered a data processing error or does not have enough memory to store a format, graphic or font. Check the file sent (format, data, syntax) and the available memory.
Zebra ZD510-HCWhy is an orange light rotating on the ring of my Zebra ZD510-HC, and why won't printing start? The previous wristband was not removed from the exit slot before a new print or feed. Tear it off at the perforation, against the tear-off edge of the exit.
Zebra ZD611Why does my Zebra ZD611 connected via USB appear as “Unspecified” in Windows? The USB cable was connected before the Zebra driver was pre-installed: Windows installed its generic driver. Disconnect the cable, remove the “Unspecified” printer in Devices and Printers, install the Zebra v8 Windows driver, then reconnect.
Zebra ZD620My USB-connected Zebra ZD620 is not recognised by Windows: how do I reinstall the driver? The USB cable was probably connected before the Zebra driver was installed, and Windows installed its generic driver. Disconnect the USB cable, remove the Zebra icons from the “Unspecified” section, install the latest Zebra driver and then reconnect the cable.
Zebra ZD620Why does my Zebra ZD620 print nothing when the job has been sent (DATA light not changing)? The data is not reaching the printer: incorrect communication settings or unsuitable serial cable. Check the driver or software settings and, for a serial connection, match the handshake protocol and port settings to those of the computer.
Zebra ZD621Why does my Zebra ZD621 receive nothing when I send a label (DATA light off)? The label format is not recognised and the DATA light does not flash: Zebra points to the communication settings. Check the driver or software settings and, over a serial link, that the port settings match and the condition of the cable.
Zebra ZD621Why is the DATA light on my Zebra ZD621 flashing when nothing prints? The ZD621 receives the data but does not recognise the format. Zebra cites ZPL prefix and delimiter characters that differ between the printer and the format, communication settings that differ, or an incorrect label format.
Zebra ZQ310 PlusMy Zebra ZQ310 Plus is on but does not print: what should I check?Zebra suggests three lines of enquiry: a replacement battery, the cable to the host device and, for wireless, re-establishing the link. For a communication error, also check the paper, that the printhead is closed and the Wi-Fi or Bluetooth icon.
Zebra ZQ310 PlusHow do I install the driver for a Zebra ZQ310 Plus on Windows when it appears as an “unspecified device”?Zebra recommends installing the driver before connecting over USB for the first time. If it is too late, use Device Manager: update the printer driver by pointing it to the folder of the downloaded Zebra driver.
Zebra ZQ320 PlusWhy does my Zebra ZQ320 Plus print nothing even though it is switched on?Zebra advises replacing the battery, checking the cable to the host device and, on wireless models, re-establishing the connection. In the event of a communication error, also check that paper is loaded, the printhead is closed and the Wi-Fi or Bluetooth icon is lit.
Zebra ZQ320 PlusMy Zebra ZQ320 Plus appears as an “unspecified device” in Windows: how do I install the driver?Zebra asks you to install the driver before connecting the printer over USB. If it was connected first, open Device Manager, select the printer and update its driver by pointing to the folder of the downloaded Zebra driver.
Zebra ZQ620 PlusWhy does my Zebra ZQ620 Plus print nothing even though it is switched on?Zebra advises checking the baud rate, the battery, the cable to the host device and the wireless link. If the printer receives data but prints nothing, the label format or commands may be invalid: diagnostics mode (Hex Dump) lets you check this.
Zebra ZT231How can I tell whether my Zebra ZT231 is receiving data from the computer correctly?Turn on communication diagnostics mode: the printer then prints every character received in ASCII, with its hexadecimal value underneath. FE, OE, PE or NE codes on the label indicate communication settings that need correcting.
Zebra ZT510Why doesn't my Zebra ZT510 print anything when I send a label? If the DATA light does not flash, the communication settings are wrong. If it flashes without printing anything, the printer's prefix and delimiter characters do not match the format, or the data sent is incorrect.
Zebra ZT610 and ZT620What should I do when my Zebra ZT610 or ZT620 shows “Paper Jam”?There is a problem with the media in its path: it is incorrectly loaded, stuck to a part or wrapped around the platen roller. Carefully remove the labels, then clean the roller if adhesive remains on it.
Zebra ZT610 and ZT620Why won't my Zebra ZT610 or ZT620 print over the network (NETWORK light red or off)?On Ethernet, NETWORK off indicates that no link is detected and solid red NETWORK an error: the printer is not connected to the network. Check the cable and the IP address; if the address is 0.0.0.0, the Zebra ZT600 Series guide asks you to enter a fixed IP address and then reset the network.
Zebra ZXP Series 7Why has my Zebra ZXP Series 7 stopped printing after an error, or why does it show “OFFLINE”?“OFFLINE” means that the printer is offline: put it back online from the control panel (MENU, ADVANCED SETTINGS, PRINTER ONLINE). After an error, what happens to pending jobs depends on the error recovery mode set in the ZXP Series Toolbox; FLUSH PRINT QUEUE deletes all pending jobs.
Honeywell MP NovaWhy does the light on my Honeywell MP Nova stay orange?According to Honeywell, solid orange indicates that the printer is paused or that the presence sensor is blocked; flashing orange, that it is paused and busy. A short press on the control button resumes printing.
Honeywell MP NovaWhy does my Honeywell MP Nova print nothing or feed several labels?According to Honeywell, the labels are incorrectly loaded or the media is not calibrated. Reload the media following the loading instructions inside the cover, then calibrate.
Honeywell PC23dWhy is the Ready-to-Work light on my Honeywell PC23d flashing?A flashing Ready-to-Work light means that the PC23d cannot accept a print job; solid, it indicates that the printer is ready. Look for the icon that is lit (media, mechanism, temperature, general error or pause) to find the cause.
Honeywell PC23dWhy does my Honeywell PC23d connected via USB not print?Even if Windows recognises the PC23d on its own, Honeywell requires the InterDriver driver to be installed for correct USB operation. Download it from the Honeywell download portal, install it, then connect the cable to the USB device port at the back.
Honeywell PC42My Honeywell PC42t stops and flashes red: how do I remove a jammed label?A label obstructing the print path puts the PC42t into error. Remove peeled-off labels or torn perforations without using a hard or pointed tool, clean the printhead if a label is stuck to it, then press Print.
Honeywell PC42Why does my computer not recognise my Honeywell PC42t over USB?Honeywell states that the InterDriver driver is required for a USB connection with a Windows PC, and that you must not connect the printer before starting the installation. Connect the cable to the USB device port at the back when the wizard asks you to.
Honeywell PC43Why is the blue light on my Honeywell PC43 flashing? The Ready-to-Work light flashes when a condition is preventing printing; it stays solid when the printer is ready. Check which icon is lit (media, ribbon, mechanism, temperature, general error or pause) and deal with the corresponding cause.
Honeywell PC43Why does my Honeywell PC43 not print over USB from Windows?Honeywell states that the InterDriver driver is mandatory for USB under Windows, even if Windows detects the printer on its own. Install InterDriver from the Honeywell download portal, then connect the USB device port, at the back, to the computer.
Honeywell PD43Why is the Ready-to-Work light on my Honeywell PD43 flashing instead of staying on?According to Honeywell, a flashing Ready-to-Work light means that the printer is not ready: a condition is preventing printing. Find the lit icon (icon model) or return to the Ready screen (display model); the light stays solid when the PD43 is ready.
Honeywell PD43My Honeywell PD43 does not print over USB: how do I connect it correctly to a Windows PC?According to Honeywell, you must install the InterDriver driver on the PC before connecting the USB cable, even if Windows detects the printer on its own. Then connect the printer's USB device port to the PC: the message “USB Host Connected” appears and no communication settings need to be set.
Honeywell PD45SWhy has my Honeywell PD45S stopped printing, with the message “Printer in Pause Mode” or “Printer in Menu Mode”?A job has been paused from the front panel, or a menu has been left open. Press the Print button to resume, or return to the Ready screen: the PD45S cannot print while the main menu is displayed.
Honeywell PD45SWhy can my Honeywell PD45S not be reached on the Ethernet or Wi-Fi network?Check that the network cable is properly connected and that it is a straight-through cable, not a crossover cable. Then check the network configuration of the PC and the printer: by default, the PD45S requests an IP address from a DHCP server and displays it at the bottom left of the screen.
Honeywell PM23cWhy is the Ready-to-Work light on my Honeywell PM23c flashing and printing not starting?According to Honeywell, the Ready-to-Work light flashes when the printer is not ready: a condition is preventing printing. Look for the lit icon on an icon model; on a touch model, exit the main menu, because the PM23c does not print while it is displayed.
Honeywell PM23cMy Honeywell PM23c does not print from the PC via USB or serial: how do I connect it?First install the InterDriver driver, then connect the USB cable when the installation asks you to; Honeywell recommends only one printer per PC, directly or via a hub. For serial, connect the RS-232 port on the rear panel to the PC's COM port with a DB9-DB9 cable and adjust the PC's serial parameters if necessary.
Honeywell PM45 and PM45cWhat should I do when the General Error icon on my Honeywell PM45 is red?According to Honeywell, the General Error icon signals a problem that does not match any other icon. In an error state, pressing Print feeds the media; if the icon stays red, contact Honeywell technical support.
Honeywell PM45 and PM45cWhy is my Honeywell PM45 paused and how do I resume printing? The white Pause icon indicates that the printer is paused. Press the Print button to resume printing. Pressing Print during printing stops or pauses the printer after the current label.
Honeywell PX940Why does my Honeywell PX940 not print the label and show error 1344 “ENODATAREADY”?A PRINTFEED command was executed in I-Style or Z-Style mode while the “dataready” signal is not enabled: the PX940 does not print the label. The setting to check is therefore whether this signal is enabled.
Honeywell RP2 and RP4Why does my Honeywell RP2 print nothing or feed several labels at once?Honeywell cites incorrectly loaded labels or uncalibrated media. Reload the roll, then calibrate; if nothing changes, the media sensor circuit may be at fault.
Honeywell RP2 and RP4Why has my Honeywell RP2 stopped printing and put my print jobs on hold? When the battery reaches a low level, the printer stops printing and queues the jobs. Replace or recharge the battery without delay: according to Honeywell, if the supercapacitor runs down first, the pending jobs are lost.
Toshiba B-EX6Why does the paper not feed in my Toshiba B-EX6, and how do I load the labels?According to Toshiba, the media is incorrectly loaded or the printer is in an error state. First deal with the message displayed, then reload the roll: media centred, guides adjusted to the width, straight path under the head and sensor positioned over the gap or black mark.
Toshiba B-EX6My Toshiba B-EX6 will not switch on: what should I check?Toshiba cites a disconnected power cord, a faulty mains socket, or a blown fuse or tripped circuit breaker. Plug the cord back in, test the socket with another appliance and check the fuse or circuit breaker.
Sato CL4NXThe labels do not feed in my Sato CL4NX: how do I reload the roll?If nothing feeds, Sato first has you check the display (error message), then the loading and that there is no jam. The roll must be pushed all the way onto the roll holder and the media must pass under the damper and under the sensor guide before the head is locked.
Sato CL4NXMy Sato CL4NX does not respond on the Ethernet network: what should I check?Three checks according to Sato: the network cable, the port and protocol defined in the printer's interface settings, then the response to ping. If the ping fails, review the IP address and subnet mask, and make sure the hub is switched on and working.
Sato CL6NX PlusHow do I load a label roll correctly in a Sato CL6NX Plus when the media does not feed? When the media does not feed, Sato asks you to look first at whether an error message is displayed, then to check the media and ribbon loading and that there is no jam. Reload the roll pushed all the way onto the roll holder, passing it under the damper and under the sensor guide.
Sato CL6NX PlusWhy is my Sato CL6NX Plus not communicating over the Ethernet network (LAN)?Sato asks you to check the LAN cable, then the port and protocol in the interface settings, then the response to ping. If there is no response, check the printer's IP address and subnet mask, as well as the hub.
Sato CT4-LXWhy is the media not feeding in my Sato CT4-LX?First read any error message on the display. Otherwise, open and close the cover, touch FEED in offline mode, then check the loading of the media and ribbon and that there is no jam.
Sato CT4-LXWhy does my Sato CT4-LX print nothing when I send a label from the computer over USB?Check the interface cable, the printer's interface settings and the printer name selected in the driver. Sato then advises restarting the printer and the computer, then reinstalling the driver with an administrator account.
Sato PW4NXWhy does the paper not feed in my Sato PW4NX, and how do I load the roll?Sato asks you first to check that no error message is displayed, then that the roll is loaded correctly and that no jam is blocking the media. Reload the roll with the printable side facing the printhead, close the cover until it clicks and press FEED.
Sato PW4NXWhy does my Sato PW4NX print nothing over USB or after data is sent?Sato asks you to check the cable, the printer's interface settings, the computer's USB port and the printer name in the driver. Then restart the printer and the computer, and reinstall the driver as an administrator if necessary.
Sato WS2Why does the media not come out of my Sato WS2?Sato cites two causes: incorrectly loaded media or a jam. Reload the roll according to section 2.3 of the manual and clear any stuck paper.
Sato WS2Why does my Sato WS2 print nothing when I have started printing? The media may be incorrectly loaded, or the data may not have arrived correctly. Reload the roll, check the interface selected in the printer driver and resend the job.
Sato WS4Why does my Sato WS4 not feed out the labels?Revision r10 of the Sato manual cites incorrectly loaded media, a jam, a print module that is not properly locked or a rubber roller that needs replacing. Reload the media, clear any jam and close the print module firmly.
Sato WS4Why does my Sato WS4 print nothing?Sato cites incorrectly loaded media or ribbon, or data not transmitted correctly. Reload the media and the ribbon, check that the interface is set correctly in the printer driver, then resend the data.
Godex DT200How do I install a Godex DT200 under Linux, and what should I do if it does not respond to print jobs?GoDEX supplies a CUPS driver (rastertoezpl) to be compiled, then declared in the CUPS interface. On a network, choose the AppSocket/HP JetDirect protocol; if the printer does not respond to jobs, GoDEX Europe blames AppArmor, which can block the print filter.
Godex EZ6250i and EZ6350iWhy does my Godex EZ6350i show “Print Head Error” without a beep and stop printing? The printhead is too hot. Wait for it to cool down: the printer returns to standby by itself, ready to print.
Godex EZ6250i and EZ6350iMy Godex EZ6250i jams or no longer feeds labels: what should I do?The media has probably wound itself around the platen roller, or the sensor can no longer find the gap or the black mark. Clear the jam, clean the printhead, then run the sensor detection again.
Godex G500Why does the light on my Godex G500 turn red and printing stop? The STATUS light turns red when the G500 detects an error. Count the beeps, find the alert in the lookup table, then check the driver settings or the commands sent.
Godex G500How do I connect a Godex G500 to a computer and install its driver? With the printer switched off, connect the AC adapter and then the USB or parallel cable, and switch on: the light should come on. Then install the driver supplied on the CD and check that the printer appears in the list of Windows printers.
Godex GE300Why does the light on my Godex GE300 stay red and printing stop? The GE300 has detected an error. First check that the print mechanism is properly closed, then the driver settings or the commands sent, and look up the error in the lookup table.
Godex GE300How do I install a Godex GE300 over USB with its Windows driver? With the printer off, plug the power adapter into an earthed socket, then connect the USB cable, and switch on: the light should come on. Then install the driver from the “Seagull Drivers” folder on the CD, choosing the Godex GE300 model.
Godex ZX400What should I do when my Godex ZX430i shows “Print head is overheat” (head too hot)? The printhead has overheated. Let it cool down: the printer returns to standby by itself and can then resume printing.
Godex ZX400How do I clear a paper jam on a Godex ZX420?Switch the printer off, open the cover and check the whole paper path, from the roll to the tear-off plate. Remove any stuck labels, reload the roll, then run calibration again.
Brother PocketJet PJ-8My Brother PJ-863 receives data but does not print: what should I do?Wait for data reception to finish, check that paper is loaded, then turn the printer off and on again. According to Brother, incomplete data, for example after a Wi-Fi dropout, blocks printing; ASCII text with no line end or page end can also put the printer on hold.
Brother PocketJet PJ-8My Brother PJ-822 does not print via USB: what should I check?According to Brother, connect the USB Type-C cable firmly or try another cable. With the printer off, connect the cable to the USB port and then to the computer, and turn the printer back on. The USB cable alone does not power the printer: a battery must be installed or an adapter connected.
Brother RJ-4250WBWhy does my Brother RJ-4250WB show “Erreur communication” (communication error)?According to Brother, the data transfer has failed. Check the data sent and the link with the computer or mobile device; if it is the Bluetooth connection that was interrupted, switch the printer off and on again.
Brother RJ-4250WBWhy does my Brother RJ-4250WB show the WLAN icon but not print over Wi-Fi?According to Brother, the WLAN icon is not enough: the printer's network settings must be configured, and the driver installed on each computer. Set Infrastructure mode (SSID and passphrase) with the Printer Setting Tool over USB, then check the IP address in WLAN > Adresse IP (IP address).
Brother TD-4Why does my Brother TD-4420TN not print?Brother asks you to check three things: the cable between the printer and the computer, the loading of the ribbon and labels, then the density setting in BPM. Disconnect and reconnect the cable, then replace it if printing does not resume.
Brother TJ-4420TNWhy does my Brother TJ-4420TN print nothing when I send a label?Brother cites a USB or serial cable that is incorrectly connected or damaged, an incorrectly configured wireless device, the wrong port in the Windows driver, a dirty printhead or a program that does not send the PRINT command. Reconnect the cable, check the driver port, then clean the printhead.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my label printer show up as “Unspecified” in Windows?

It was connected by USB before its driver was installed: Windows assigned it a generic driver. Zebra has you unplug the USB cable, delete the entry in Devices and Printers, install the Zebra driver, then reconnect the cable. To avoid this, install the driver before connecting the printer for the first time, as Zebra and Honeywell recommend.

Why is the DATA light on my printer flashing but nothing prints?

The data is arriving, but the printer does not recognise the format. Zebra cites prefix and delimiter characters that differ between the printer and the format, communication settings that differ from those of the computer, or an incorrect label format. Compare the prefixes on the configuration label: on a GK420, they are ^ and ~ by default.

How do I know if my printer is receiving the data I send?

Put it into communication diagnostics mode: it then prints everything it receives, in ASCII and in hexadecimal. On the Zebra ZD420, ZD621 and ZT411, you enable this mode by holding PAUSE and FEED for 2 seconds while the printer is ready; on ZQ mobile printers, it is offered at the end of the configuration report. GoDEX sums it up for its dump mode: if nothing prints, the data is not reaching the printer.
