Why is my thermal printer printing faded labels or unreadable barcodes?
Scheduled visits to check, clean and adjust your printers and spot worn parts before they fail.
In brief. Faded or washed-out print, or barcodes that can no longer be read, most often come from a dirty printhead: it is the cause most often cited in the manufacturers' guides. Next come darkness (density) set too low or speed set too high, a ribbon poorly matched to the media and insufficient printhead pressure. Clean the printhead and the platen roller first, then adjust the darkness; if nothing changes, the printhead may be worn.

Why does a thermal printer produce faded print? The causes cited by manufacturers
These causes come from the manufacturers' guides, from the most often cited to the rarest; each example names the model concerned, whose entry in the by-model table below gives the exact procedure.
- Dirty printheadAdhesive, dust and dirt build up on the printhead and degrade printing (GoDEX MX20). Zebra links a dirty printhead to a distorted image or missing print (ZD411); according to Honeywell, these deposits can also shorten the life of the printhead (RP4). Brother also cites a dirty platen roller (RJ-4250WB).
- Darkness or speed set incorrectlyEach type of media needs its own darkness setting, Zebra points out (ZD620), and a slower speed generally improves quality (ZT510). Sato cites the [Darkness] and [Speed] settings (CT4-LX). The driver or the labelling software can impose its own values and replace the printer's (Zebra GK420).
- Unsuitable ribbon or mediaIn thermal transfer, the ribbon (wax, wax-resin or resin) must suit the media: Toshiba cites a mismatched ribbon for blurred print (B-EX6), Zebra an incompatible label-ribbon combination or a ribbon used with direct thermal media (ZT410). On its mobile printers, Zebra also has you check the quality of the media (ZQ630, ZQ511).
- Printhead pressure too low or unevenPrint that is lighter on one side comes from uneven pressure, according to Zebra (ZT421); Honeywell cites pressure that is too low (PD45S), Sato an incorrectly set pressure balance (CL4NX). Zebra and Honeywell ask for the lowest pressure that gives good quality: too much wears the printhead faster. Zebra GK and GX printers have no pressure adjustment.
- Worn or faulty printheadZebra cites a worn or damaged printhead among the causes of poor-quality print (ZD410, ZD420), Honeywell a faulty printhead (MP Nova). If the PD45S print remains faded after adjustment and cleaning, Honeywell says to replace the printhead.
- Media or ribbon loaded incorrectlySato begins its checks with the loading of the media and ribbon (FX3-LX, CL6NX Plus), and Brother first has you check that the ribbon and labels are suitable and correctly loaded (TD-4, TJ-4420TN).
What to check, in order
- Clean the printhead and the platen rollerWith the printer switched off and the printhead cooled, run a new cleaning pen from the centre to the edges (Zebra ZD421, GK420, GX420), a cleaning card (Honeywell PC42t, PD45S) or a cotton swab moistened with isopropyl alcohol, according to your model's guide. Also clean the platen roller and let it dry before closing.
- Check the loading and the ribbon-media matchReload the media and ribbon. In thermal transfer, the ribbon must suit the media and be at least as wide as the media (Zebra). If the label turns black when you scratch it with a fingernail, it is direct thermal and is used without a ribbon (Zebra ZT410); also check that the print method set matches the media (Honeywell PC43).
- Adjust the darkness and speedPrint your model's test series: print quality report (FEED self-test) on the Zebra ZD410, ZD420 or ZD621, six-flash sequence on the GK420 and GX420, Print Quality wizard on Honeywell printers. Keep the lowest setting that gives sharp barcodes and check that the driver does not impose other values. On Zebra ZQ mobile printers, also check that draft mode is not enabled.
- Adjust the printhead pressureIf one side stays lighter, adjust the pressure dials or toggles according to the media width (Zebra ZT410, Honeywell PD45S, Sato CL4NX), to the minimum that gives good print. On the Toshiba B-852 and B-EX4T1, check the position of the printhead pressure lever.
- Check the power supplyZebra states that a power supply other than the one intended for the printer causes faded print (GK420, GX420, ZD410). On the ZQ310 Plus and ZQ320 Plus, Zebra also has you check the battery.
- Have the printhead checked if nothing changesA worn printhead must be replaced: Zebra specifies this for the ZD420 and ZD620, Honeywell for the PD45S. Brother refers you to the dealer or customer service (TD-4, TJ-4420TN), Honeywell to service for a faulty printhead (MP Nova, RP2).
Caution: Switch off the printer, unplug it or remove its battery, and let the printhead cool before cleaning it. Do not touch the heating element with bare hands: Toshiba and Zebra warn of the damage caused by static electricity. Use no hard or pointed tool, no water and no solvent such as thinner or benzine (Sato, Toshiba); isopropyl alcohol is flammable, Honeywell reminds you.
What the documentation recommends, model by model
For 62 models, the manufacturer's documentation describes this symptom. Each row links to the detailed entry in the guide, with the full procedure and its sources.
| Model | Guide entry | Short answer |
|---|---|---|
| Zebra ZT230 | Why is my Zebra ZT230 printing faded or with unreadable barcodes? | Start by cleaning the printhead and the platen roller using the Zebra procedure: a swab from the maintenance kit or a swab moistened with 99.7% isopropyl alcohol, wiped along the brown strip of the printhead from end to end, then over the platen roller. |
| Honeywell PF4i | Why does my Honeywell PF4i print faintly, and how do I clean its printhead? | For weak print, the Intermec guide cites an incorrect media type setting, contrast set too low, printhead pressure too low or a worn printhead. It also asks you to clean the printhead every time you change media, with a cleaning card slid under the printhead. |
| Honeywell PF4i | Why does my Honeywell PF4i leave white lines or faint areas on the labels? | The Intermec guide first cites a dirty printhead: clean it. If dots are still missing, the printhead is faulty and must be replaced. |
| Zebra ZT410 | Why does my Zebra ZT410 print too light or too dark? | Zebra cites a dirty printhead, incorrectly set darkness or speed, incorrect printhead pressure and an unsuitable label and ribbon combination. Clean the printhead and the platen roller, then set the darkness and speed as precisely as possible. |
| Zebra ZT410 | Why does my Zebra ZT410 print lighter on one side of the label? | The pressure of the two printhead dials is unevenly distributed. If the left side is faded, turn the inner dial up by one position; if it is the right side, the outer dial. Zebra advises the lowest pressure that gives good quality. |
| Toshiba B-852 | How do I correct a print offset, cut offset or contrast on my Toshiba B-852? | The B-852 offers fine adjustments in the <3> ADJUST SET menu: feed (FEED ADJ.), cut position (CUT ADJ.), back feed (BACK ADJ.), horizontal offset (X ADJUST) and contrast (TONE ADJ.). You access it in pause by holding RESTART for 3 seconds, then pressing FEED twice. |
| Toshiba B-852 | Why is the print on my Toshiba B-852 faded or blurred, and how do I clean the printhead? | Toshiba cites a ribbon poorly matched to the media and a dirty printhead. Clean the printhead with the cleaning pen supplied, choose a ribbon suited to the media and, if a tag or thin media prints too light, set the printhead pressure lever to the low position. |
| Zebra ZT421 | How do I clean the printhead on my Zebra ZT421 when the print becomes faded or uneven? | Zebra links uneven quality (voids in barcodes or graphics) to a dirty printhead, and the “Head Maintenance Needed” message calls for this cleaning. Open the printhead, wipe the brown strip from one end to the other with a swab from the Zebra maintenance kit or one moistened with 99.7% isopropyl alcohol, clean the platen roller, let it dry, then reload. |
| Zebra ZT421 | Why does my Zebra ZT421 print too light or too dark, with unreadable barcodes? | Zebra blames incorrectly set darkness or speed, unsuitable or incompatible media or ribbon, and incorrect printhead pressure. Set the darkness to the lowest acceptable level, try another combination of media and ribbon and check the pressure; the print quality assistance wizard also lets you choose the best test label. |
| Zebra ZT420 | Why does my Zebra ZT420 print too light or too dark? | Zebra cites a dirty printhead, incorrectly set darkness or speed, incorrect printhead pressure and an unsuitable label and ribbon combination. Clean the printhead and the platen roller, then set the darkness and speed as precisely as possible. |
| Zebra ZT420 | Why does my Zebra ZT420 print lighter on one side of the label? | The pressure of the two printhead dials is unevenly distributed. If the left side is faded, turn the inner dial up by one position; if it is the right side, the outer dial. Zebra advises the lowest pressure that gives good quality. |
| Zebra ZT411 | How do I clean the printhead on my Zebra ZT411 when the print becomes faded or uneven? | Zebra links uneven quality (voids in barcodes or graphics) to a dirty printhead, and the “Head Maintenance Needed” message calls for this cleaning. Open the printhead, wipe the brown strip from one end to the other with a swab from the Zebra maintenance kit or one moistened with 99.7% isopropyl alcohol, clean the platen roller, let it dry, then reload. |
| Zebra ZT411 | Why does my Zebra ZT411 print too light or too dark, with unreadable barcodes? | Zebra blames incorrectly set darkness or speed, unsuitable or incompatible media or ribbon, and incorrect printhead pressure. Set the darkness to the lowest acceptable level, try another combination of media and ribbon and check the pressure; the print quality assistance wizard also lets you choose the best test label. |
| Honeywell PX6i | Why does my Honeywell PX6i print faded, or lighter on one side of the label? | For weak print over the whole label, the Honeywell guide asks you to check the media setting, increase the contrast, then the printhead pressure, and as a last resort replace the printhead. If only one side is faded, you need to adjust the pressure arm. |
| Honeywell PX6i | Why does my Honeywell PX6i print with faded areas in places? | According to the Honeywell guide, weak areas come from particles on the media, mismatched media and ribbon, contrast set too low or a worn printhead. Clean or change the media, use compatible, high-quality consumables, increase the contrast; if that is not enough, replace the printhead. |
| Toshiba B-EX4T1 | Why is the print on my Toshiba B-EX4T1 faded or blurred, and how do I clean the printhead? | Toshiba cites a ribbon poorly matched to the media and a dirty printhead. Clean the printhead with the Toshiba printhead cleaner or a cotton bud lightly moistened with alcohol, choose a suitable ribbon and check the position of the head lever (LABEL for labels, TAG for tags). |
| Zebra S4M | Why is my Zebra S4M printing too faintly or with voids? | According to Zebra, print that is too light or has voids is first corrected by increasing the darkness (DARKNESS), which takes effect immediately. A slower print speed also generally improves quality. If only one side is faded, or if the media needs more pressure, adjust the printhead pressure. |
| Zebra S4M | Why is the print from my Zebra S4M lighter on one side, or why do the labels drift sideways? | The printhead pressure is not suited to the media. The S4M has two pressure knobs, inner and outer, with four positions: start from the values Zebra recommends for the width of your labels, then adjust one position at a time. |
| Honeywell MP Compact4 Mark III | Why does the print from my Honeywell MP Compact4 Mark III show streaks or voids? | According to the Honeywell guide, these defects are most often caused by deposits on the printhead. Clean it with a cleaning film loaded like a roll of labels, or with a cotton swab moistened with isopropyl alcohol, with the printer off and the printhead cool. |
| Honeywell MP Compact4 Mark III | Why does my Honeywell MP Compact4 Mark III print faintly or unevenly across the width of the label? | The Honeywell guide first asks you to increase the heat or reduce the print speed. If that is not enough, adjust the printhead pressure with its two screws, evenly, using the minimum pressure needed. |
| Zebra GK420 | Why is the print on my Zebra GK420 faded, and how do I clean the printhead? | Zebra first cites a dirty printhead, then an unsuitable darkness or speed setting, incompatible media, a worn printhead or a slipping platen roller. Clean the printhead with a new cleaning pen, then adjust the darkness with the six-flash sequence. |
| Zebra GK420 | Why does my Zebra GK420 make a grinding noise or print faintly with a different power supply? | According to Zebra, an unsuitable power supply does not deliver enough power and causes grinding noises and faded print. Use the power supply approved for the GK Series: 100-240 V AC input, 24 V DC and 70 W output. |
| Zebra ZD421 | How do I clean the printhead on my Zebra ZD421 when print quality declines? | Zebra recommends cleaning the printhead each time a new roll of media is loaded, with a new cleaning pen. Rub the dark area of the printhead from the centre outwards, then wait one minute before closing the printer or reloading the ribbon. |
| Zebra ZD421 | How do I adjust the print darkness (density) on my Zebra ZD421? | Print a print quality report (FEED self test): the printer prints a series of labels at different darkness settings and at two speeds. Keep the setting that gives the best barcodes, then apply it with Zebra Setup Utilities, the labelling software or the manual darkness adjustment. |
| Sato FX3-LX | Why is the print on my Sato FX3-LX faded, and how do I clean the printhead? | Sato cites incorrectly loaded media, a dirty printhead and unsuitable darkness ([Darkness]) and speed ([Speed]) settings. Clean the printhead with the cleaning kit, run a test print from [Tools] > [Test Print], then adjust [Darkness] and [Speed] if necessary. |
| Sato FX3-LX | How do I clean the printhead of my Sato FX3-LX with a cleaning sheet? | With the printer switched off, place a strip of cleaning sheet about 8 cm wide on the platen roller, rough side towards the cover, close the cover and pull the sheet out with both hands. Repeat two or three times until it comes out clean, then wipe the printhead with a cotton swab. |
| Zebra GX420 | Why is the print on my Zebra GX420 faded, and how do I adjust the darkness? | Zebra cites a printhead that is dirty or too cold, incorrectly set darkness or speed, incompatible media, an insufficient power supply, a worn printhead or a slipping platen roller. Clean the printhead with the cleaning pen, then set the darkness with the six-flash sequence. |
| Zebra GX420 | Why does my Zebra GX420 make a grinding noise or print faintly with a different power supply? | According to Zebra, an unsuitable power supply does not deliver enough power and causes grinding noises and faded print. The GX requires a power supply with 24 V DC and 100 W output; the print problems table in the GX420t guide also asks you to check these 100 W. |
| Zebra QLn420 | Why does my Zebra QLn420 print faded? | Zebra gives two causes: a dirty printhead and poor-quality media. Clean the printhead with a Zebra cleaning pen or a cotton swab moistened with 90% medical alcohol, from the centre outwards, then check the media. Zebra advises this cleaning every five rolls. |
| Godex MX20 | How do I clean the printhead on my Godex MX20 when the print becomes blurred or faded? | The GoDEX manual links a blurred image to the darkness setting (Darkness) and to a dirty printhead. Switch off the printer, open the cover and wipe the printhead with a soft, lint-free cloth soaked in alcohol; GoDEX recommends this cleaning once a week. |
| Zebra ZQ630 | Why is my Zebra ZQ630 printing faintly or with gaps? | Zebra first asks you to clean the printhead and check the media quality. Clean the grey line of the printhead with a Zebra cleaning pen, from the centre towards the edges, after every five rolls (after every roll with linerless media). |
| Zebra ZQ511 | Why is my Zebra ZQ511 printing faded labels or labels with missing parts? | Clean the printhead with a Zebra cleaning pen or a cotton swab moistened with 90% medical alcohol, then check the media quality. If the print is partial, also check the media alignment and the cover latching. |
| Zebra ZQ511 | What does “HEAD MAINTEN. NEEDED” mean on my Zebra ZQ511, and when should I clean the printhead? | The message indicates that printhead maintenance is needed and that printing has stopped. The Zebra guide does not detail its cause; the printhead maintenance it describes is cleaning, recommended after five rolls, or after every roll with linerless media. |
| Zebra ZQ610 Plus | Why is my Zebra ZQ610 Plus printing faintly or with gaps? | Zebra first asks you to clean the printhead and check the media quality. Clean the grey line of the printhead with a Zebra cleaning pen, from the centre towards the edges, after every five rolls (after every roll with linerless media). |
| Zebra ZQ510 | Why is my Zebra ZQ510 printing faintly or with missing parts? | Clean the printhead with a Zebra cleaning pen or a cotton bud moistened with 90% medical alcohol, then check the paper quality. If the print is partial, also check the paper alignment and the cover latching. |
| Zebra ZQ510 | What does “HEAD MAINTEN. NEEDED” mean on my Zebra ZQ510, and when should the printhead be cleaned? | The message indicates that printhead maintenance is required and that printing has stopped. The Zebra guide does not detail the cause; the printhead maintenance it describes is cleaning, recommended after five rolls, or after every roll with linerless paper. |
| Sato PW208NX | Why is the print on my Sato PW208NX faded, and how do I clean the printhead? | Sato cites incorrectly loaded media, a dirty printhead or sensor (or one covered by a label) and unsuitable darkness and speed settings. Clean the printhead with a cotton cloth moistened with cleaning fluid, do a test print, then adjust [Darkness] and [Speed]. |
| Zebra ZC100 and ZC300 | Why does my Zebra ZC300 print faintly along the long edge of the card or make a clicking noise? | Zebra links these two symptoms to the side fill panels: if incorrectly installed, they produce light print along the long edge of the card; if missing, they cause clicking during printing. Open the printer, remove the ribbon and correctly install the panel on the side concerned. |
| Zebra ZD410 | Why is my Zebra ZD410 printing faintly or poorly, and how do I clean the printhead? | Zebra first cites an unsuitable darkness or speed setting and a dirty head. Clean the head with a new cleaning pen, from the centre outwards, then print the print quality report to find the right darkness. |
| Zebra ZD410 | How do I adjust the print darkness (contrast) on a Zebra ZD410? | Print the print quality report (FEED self-test) to compare several darkness levels, or use the manual darkness setting in advanced mode. Keep the level that gives solid, even black lines. |
| Zebra ZD411 | How do I clean the printhead on my Zebra ZD411 when printing becomes faded or incomplete? | A dirty head distorts the image or leaves voids. Open the printer, remove the ribbon if there is one, run a new cleaning pen over the dark strip of the head from the centre outwards, then wait one minute before closing. |
| Zebra ZD411 | Why is the printing on my Zebra ZD411 blurred, smudged, too light or too dark? | Zebra first cites a darkness or speed setting unsuited to the media: print the print quality report (FEED self-test) to find the right combination. Then check that the head and platen roller are clean and, in thermal transfer, that the ribbon and labels are matched. |
| Zebra ZD420 | Why is my Zebra ZD420 printing faintly or unevenly? | Zebra first cites a darkness or speed setting unsuited to the media, then a dirty printhead, a dirty platen roller or a worn head. Print the print quality report to choose the right setting, then clean the head with a new cleaning pen. |
| Zebra ZD420 | How do I make the print darker on a Zebra ZD420 without software? | Use the manual darkness setting in advanced mode: the ZD420 prints increasingly dark patterns and you stop the series with FEED on the first pattern with solid, even black lines. |
| Zebra ZD500R | Why is the print from my Zebra ZD500R faded, bleeding or hard to scan? | Zebra advises the lowest darkness setting that still gives good quality, and a slower speed: too much darkness makes the print fuzzy, hinders barcode reading, burns through the ribbon and wears the printhead faster. Also check that ribbon and media are suited to each other. |
| Zebra ZD510-HC | How do I clean the printhead on my Zebra ZD510-HC with the cleaning card? | Zebra provides a cleaning card that cleans the printhead, the platen roller and the feed roller, to be used every 5 cartridges. Insert the card from the back with the cover closed, then hold EJECT for about 15 seconds while switching on the printer: the card moves forwards and back. |
| Zebra ZD510-HC | How do I adjust the print darkness on my Zebra ZD510-HC? | By default, darkness follows the cartridge value (CARTRIDGE mode) and commands that change it are ignored. To change it, set the darkness mode to USER or RELATIVE, then set the darkness to the lowest level that gives good quality. |
| Zebra ZD611 | Why is the print quality on my Zebra ZD611 poor? | Zebra reviews six causes: darkness or speed set incorrectly, dirty printhead, worn printhead, dirty or damaged platen roller, ribbon unsuited to the media and non-original power supply. Start with the print quality report (FEED self test) to set darkness and speed. |
| Zebra ZD611 | How do I clean the printhead on my Zebra ZD611 when print quality deteriorates? | Zebra links a dirty printhead to a distorted image or gaps. Clean it with a new cleaning pen, from the middle towards the edges of the dark area, after removing the ribbon, then wait one minute before closing. |
| Zebra ZD620 | Why is the print from my Zebra ZD620 faded or of poor quality? | Zebra first cites incorrectly set darkness or speed, then a dirty printhead. Print the print quality report to choose darkness and speed, then clean the printhead with a new cleaning pen. |
| Zebra ZD620 | How do I adjust the print darkness on a Zebra ZD620 using the buttons? | Enter advanced mode, select manual darkness adjustment (DATA light yellow) and press PAUSE: the ZD620 prints increasingly dark test patterns. Press FEED as soon as a pattern shows solid, even black lines. |
| Zebra ZD621 | How do I clean the printhead on my Zebra ZD621, and how often? | Zebra recommends cleaning the ZD621's printhead every time you load a new roll, with a new cleaning pen. Remove the ribbon if there is one, wipe the dark area of the printhead from the centre outwards, then wait one minute before closing. |
| Zebra ZD621 | How do I find the right darkness setting on my Zebra ZD621? | Zebra offers the print quality report (FEED self test): the ZD621 prints a series of labels at several darkness settings and two speeds. Keep the setting that gives the best barcodes at the speed you use, as each media can require a different darkness. |
| Zebra ZQ310 Plus | Why are the tickets printed by my Zebra ZQ310 Plus faded? | Start by cleaning the printhead with a Zebra cleaning pen or a cotton bud with 90% medical alcohol. Zebra then has you check the battery, the paper quality and, for labels, the “Tone” setting (value 50). |
| Zebra ZQ320 Plus | Why is the print from my Zebra ZQ320 Plus faded or of poor quality? | Zebra first advises cleaning the printhead with a cleaning pen or a cotton bud soaked in 90% medical alcohol. Then check the battery and the paper quality; for labels, the “Tone” setting must be at 50. |
| Zebra ZQ620 Plus | Why does my Zebra ZQ620 Plus print faded or with gaps? | Zebra gives the same answer for faded print and partial print: clean the printhead and check the quality of the media. Clean the thin grey line on the printhead with a Zebra cleaning pen or a cotton bud soaked in 90% medical alcohol, from the centre towards the edges. |
| Zebra ZT231 | Why are the labels from my Zebra ZT231 coming out faded or too dark? | Zebra cites incorrectly set darkness or speed, a dirty printhead, incorrect printhead pressure or an unsuitable label and ribbon combination. Clean the printhead and the platen roller, then set the darkness to the lowest level that gives good quality in Menu > Print > Print Quality. |
| Zebra ZT510 | Why is my Zebra ZT510 printing too light or too dark? | Zebra cites a dirty printhead, incorrectly set darkness or speed, unsuitable printhead pressure and a poorly chosen label and ribbon combination. Clean the printhead and the platen roller, then find the lowest darkness and speed that give a sharp print. |
| Zebra ZT610 and ZT620 | How do I clean the printhead on my Zebra ZT610 or ZT620 when the print is faded? | The “Head Maintenance Needed” message asks you to clean the printhead, and Zebra cites a dirty printhead among the causes of poor quality. Clean the printhead and the platen roller with a swab moistened with 99.7% isopropyl alcohol, then set the darkness to the lowest level that gives good quality. |
| Zebra ZT610 and ZT620 | Why does my Zebra ZT610 or ZT620 print lighter on one side of the label? | According to Zebra, the printhead pressure is uneven. Adjust the printhead pressure with the toggles, to the minimum that gives good quality, then check their position. |
| Honeywell MP Nova | Why is the print on my Honeywell MP Nova faded or of poor quality? | Honeywell first cites a dirty printhead: clean it with a Honeywell cleaning card fed through the printer. Then check the heat and speed settings and, on a TT model, the match between ribbon and labels. |
| Honeywell MP Nova | Why is the print on my Honeywell MP Nova light on the right-hand side of the label? | Honeywell cites a cover that is not properly latched: latch it. If the fault persists, the printhead is not correctly aligned and the guide asks you to call for service. |
| Honeywell PC23d | Why is my Honeywell PC23d printing faintly? | The PC23d prints in direct thermal, without ribbon: check that the print method is set accordingly, then print the labels from the Print Quality wizard. On thick media, adjust Media Sensitivity and Darkness; printhead cleaning is described in the “Maintain the Printer” chapter of the manual. |
| Honeywell PC42 | How do I clean the printhead on a Honeywell PC42t when the print is faded? | For poor print quality, Honeywell recommends cleaning the printhead with a cleaning card, then checking that the ribbon suits the labels and that the darkness is suited to the media and ribbon combination. The guide advises cleaning the printhead at each roll change. |
| Honeywell PC43 | Why is the print faded on my Honeywell PC43t? | First check that the print method matches the media (direct thermal or ribbon), then print the Print Quality wizard labels to assess the result. On tag stock, Honeywell asks you to adjust Media Sensitivity and Darkness; cleaning the printhead is described in the “Maintain the Printer” chapter of the manual. |
| Honeywell PD45S | Why is the print on my Honeywell PD45S faded, and how do I clean the printhead? | First check that the print quality setting matches the media, then increase the contrast or the printhead pressure if they are too low. Clean the printhead with a cleaning card: Honeywell recommends doing so at every roll change. If the print stays faded, the printhead needs replacing. |
| Honeywell PD45S | Why does my Honeywell PD45S print lighter on one side or make the media drift? | The printhead pressure is unbalanced. The PD45S is factory-set for full-width media (4 inches, 102 mm): with narrower media, or if one side prints lighter, reposition the toggles and adjust the pressure. |
| Honeywell PM23c | What should I do when the print quality on my Honeywell PM23c is poor (too faded, too dark)? | In the event of poor print quality, the Honeywell manual refers you to the Wizards > Printing > Print Quality wizard: it prints a series of labels to determine the best quality setting. On an icon model, the print settings are changed from the web page or PrintSet 5. |
| Honeywell RP2 and RP4 | Why is the print on my Honeywell RP2 faded or of poor quality? | Honeywell first cites a dirty printhead: clean it with a cleaning card or a cotton swab moistened with isopropyl alcohol. Then check that the darkness setting (heat, speed) suits the media. |
| Honeywell RP2 and RP4 | Why is the print on my Honeywell RP4 lighter on the right-hand side? | The Honeywell guide cites a cover that is not properly latched: close it until it latches. If the print is still light on the right, the printhead may be misaligned and Honeywell refers you to service. |
| Toshiba B-EX6 | Why is the print on my Toshiba B-EX6 blurred or faded, and how do I clean the printhead? | Toshiba cites an unsuitable ribbon / media combination and a dirty printhead. Clean the head with the printhead cleaner or a cotton swab lightly moistened with ethyl alcohol, and check that the ribbon is suitable for the media. |
| Sato CL4NX | How do I clean the printhead on a Sato CL4NX that prints too faintly? | For Sato, faded print comes from incorrect loading, a dirty head or sensor, or unsuitable darkness and speed settings. Clean the head with the cleaning kit, run a test print, then adjust [Darkness] and [Speed]. |
| Sato CL4NX | Why is the print on my Sato CL4NX lighter on one edge, or shifted to one side? | For these two symptoms, the CL4NX manual has you check the printhead pressure balance, the media and ribbon loading, and the cleanliness of the head and sensor. Set the balance knobs according to the media width, then check on an actual print. |
| Sato CL6NX Plus | Why is the print on my Sato CL6NX Plus faded, and how do I clean the printhead? | Sato cites three causes: media or ribbon incorrectly loaded, head or sensor dirty, darkness and speed incorrectly set. | Godex G500 | Why is the print on my Godex G500 lighter on one side of the label? | The print line may no longer be parallel to the platen roller, or the printhead pressure may not suit the media. The G500 lets you adjust the print line with a knob and the printhead pressure with two screws. |
| Godex GE300 | Faded print on my Godex GE300: how do I clean the printhead? | Switch the printer off, open the cover, lift the mechanism and remove the ribbon, then wipe the printhead with a soft, lint-free cloth moistened with alcohol. GoDEX recommends doing this cleaning every week. |
| Godex GE300 | Why is the print on my Godex GE300 blurred? | The GoDEX manual gives three checks: the density (darkness) setting, the cleanliness of the printhead and the compatibility of the ribbon with the media. |
| Godex HD830i | How do I look after the 8-inch printhead of the Godex HD830i? | The GoDEX Europe care guide recommends a GoDEX cleaning pen or 99% isopropyl alcohol on a soft cloth, and rules out water-based products. Frequently asked questions
Should I increase the darkness when the print is faded?
Only after cleaning the printhead. Zebra recommends the lowest darkness that gives good quality: set too high, it makes the print blurred, hinders barcode reading and wears the printhead faster (ZD500R, ZQ630). On the GK and GX, Zebra specifies that darkness forced up to make up for poor media shortens the life of the printhead.
Why is the print lighter on one side of the label?
Most often, the printhead pressure is unevenly distributed: Zebra (ZT410, ZT421), Honeywell (PD45S) and Sato (CL4NX) have you adjust the dials or toggles according to the media width. On the Zebra GK420 and GX420, check that the printhead is latched on both sides. On the Honeywell MP Nova and RP4, a faded right-hand side comes from a cover that is not properly latched; if the fault persists, the printhead is misaligned and Honeywell refers you to service.
How often should I clean the printhead on a label printer?
It depends on the manufacturer. Zebra recommends cleaning with every new roll on the ZD421 and ZD621, and at least every five rolls; Honeywell specifies every 3 to 5 rolls on the RP2 and RP4, GoDEX once a week on the G500 and GE300. Toshiba recommends daily cleaning in heavy use and at every media or ribbon change (B-EX4T1, B-EX6).
