Why is my label printer skipping labels or shifting the print?

Explore preventive maintenance

Scheduled visits to check, clean and adjust your printers and spot worn parts before they fail.

In brief. When a printer skips labels or prints out of position, it can no longer find the start of each label: the gap, notch or black mark that separates them. Manufacturers' documentation first cites a calibration that needs redoing for the loaded media, then a sensor that is dirty or covered by a label, a media type set incorrectly and a sensor in the wrong position. Run a calibration again after every label change; if the skipping continues, clean the sensor and check its position.

Why does a label printer skip labels? The causes cited by manufacturers

These causes come from the manufacturers' guides, from the most often cited to the rarest; each example names the model concerned, whose entry in the by-model table below gives the exact procedure.

  1. Printer not calibrated for the mediaCalibration teaches the printer the media type and the label length. Zebra calls for it every time the media size or type changes, and as soon as the printer skips labels (ZT410, ZT421). Brother specifies it at every media change (TJ-4420TN), and Honeywell also after a firmware update (RP4).
  2. Sensor dirty or covered by a labelDust, adhesive or a label that has come loose prevent the sensor from seeing the gap or the mark. Sato cites this for errors 1028 (Gap Not Found) and 1035 (I-mark Not Found) on the CT4-LX, Honeywell for a PC42t that feeds labels without stopping, and GoDEX and Brother among the causes of skipped labels (GE300, TD-4).
  3. Media type or sensor type set incorrectlyThe printer must know whether the media has gaps, has black marks or is continuous. Zebra describes separate labels being treated as continuous media by a printer set to continuous or not calibrated (ZT410, ZT510); Sato has you choose [Gap] or [I-Mark] in the [Sensor Type] setting (CL4NX). On the ZQ510, the black mark sensor is used by default: according to Zebra, gap media generally requires a setting change.
  4. Sensor in the wrong positionThe sensor must be opposite the gap, notch or black mark. Zebra leaves the movable sensor in the centre for gap labels and otherwise aligns it with the mark or notch (ZD420, ZD620); Toshiba places the black mark sensor at the centre of the mark (B-EX6) and Honeywell aligns the stop sensor with the black marks (PD43).
  5. Media loaded incorrectly or guides badly positionedMedia that wanders from side to side instead of feeding straight upsets detection: Sato cites this for errors 1028 and 1035 (FX3-LX, PW208NX). Zebra asks for guides that just touch the edge of the media (ZT421), and GoDEX cites the adjustment of the paper guides (G500).
  6. Label format or length set incorrectlyZebra cites an incorrect label format (ZT610) and, on the ZQ620 Plus, a maximum label length (Label Length Max) that is too short: the printer then assumes the media is continuous. GoDEX blames the label height setting (EZ6250i). Honeywell explains every other label being skipped by content placed too close to the top edge (MP Nova).

What to check, in order

  1. Reload the mediaRoll properly seated, media fed through the sensor, guides touching the edge: according to Sato, the media must feed straight.
  2. Clean the sensorRemove any stuck label, then the dust: Zebra recommends canned air or a dry cotton swab, and a swab moistened with alcohol for adhesive (GK420, ZD411).
  3. Position the sensor and set the media typeThe sensor must be opposite the gap, notch or black mark. Then, in the menus, set the type of media actually loaded: gap, black mark or continuous.
  4. Run a calibrationFor example, PAUSE and CANCEL held for two seconds on the Zebra ZD411 or ZD620 (SmartCal calibration), [Auto-calibration] on Sato printers, the Print button held down on the Honeywell PC42t and PD45S. Then press FEED: according to Zebra, a single label should advance. If automatic calibration fails, move on to the manual calibration in your model's guide.
  5. Check the label format and lengthThe label size set in the software or driver must match the media: Zebra points out that they can override the printer's settings (ZT410). On the ZQ610 Plus and ZQ620 Plus, set Label Length Max at least 25.4 mm above the label length, gap included.
  6. Call in a technician if the skipping continuesFirst clean or replace the platen roller if it slips (Zebra ZD410, ZD620). Honeywell then mentions a faulty media sensor and refers you to service (MP Nova, RP4); Sato refers you to its dealer or its technical support (CL4NX, PW4NX).

Caution: Let the printhead cool before opening the printer: Zebra warns that it can cause severe burns. Remove rings, watches and other metal objects before working near the printhead (Zebra), and keep your hands away from moving parts during calibration (Toshiba). To remove dust from the sensors, Zebra forbids the use of an air compressor; do not use any hard or pointed tool to remove a stuck label (Honeywell).

Zebra ZQ630How do I calibrate a Zebra ZQ630?Label length calibration is started from the Tools menu, with the “Label Length Cal” function. If it fails, the Label Length Max setting is probably too low: the printer then thinks the media is continuous.
Zebra ZQ630Why is my Zebra ZQ630 skipping labels?According to Zebra, the printer is not correctly locating the start of the labels. Check that the media has gaps or black marks, that the format does not exceed the print area and that the sensors are not blocked, then recalibrate.
Zebra ZQ511Why is my Zebra ZQ511 not detecting black marks or skipping labels?Check the position of the black marks: they must be centred on the roll, and on the back of the media unless the printer is set for marks on the front (media.bar_location set to front). Keep the 15 mm central strip free of any dark pre-printed graphics, and clean the sensor windows.
Zebra ZQ610 PlusHow do I calibrate a Zebra ZQ610 Plus? The ZQ610 Plus is calibrated from the Tools menu, with the “Label Length Cal” function, which adjusts the label length. You can also set it to calibrate at start-up (Power Up Action) or when the printhead is closed (Head Close Action).
Zebra ZQ610 PlusWhy does my Zebra ZQ610 Plus fail to calibrate, as if the media were continuous? The “Label Length Max” setting is probably shorter than the actual length of your labels: the printer then treats the media as continuous and calibration fails. Set it to at least 25.4 mm more than the label length plus the gap between labels, then recalibrate.
Zebra ZQ510How do I calibrate a Zebra ZQ510?The ZQ510 is calibrated by commands sent from a computer, with Zebra Setup Utilities or the send file function of the ZDesigner driver. Specify the media type, send the calibration command, then switch the printer off and on again.
Zebra ZQ510Why does my Zebra ZQ510 skip labels or fail to detect black marks? The sensor used does not match the media, or the marks and notches are not where the sensor expects them. By default, the ZQ510 uses the black mark sensor: with gap labels, set the detection mode then recalibrate.
Sato PW208NXWhat does “Error 1028 (Gap Not Found)” or “Error 1035 (I-mark Not Found)” mean on my Sato PW208NX?The printer cannot find the gap between labels (1028) or the black mark (1035). Sato CT4-LXHow do I calibrate the label sensor on a Sato CT4-LX?Auto-calibration is started from SETTINGS > Printing > Advanced > Calibrate > Auto-calibration. Load the media with one label peeled off, so that the sensor only sees the liner, then choose the sensor type to adjust.
Sato PW4NXWhat does “Error 1028 (Gap Not Found)” or “Error 1035 (I-mark Not Found)” mean on my Sato PW4NX?The printer cannot find the gap between labels (1028) or the black mark (1035). Reload the roll so that it feeds straight, clean the sensor, check the sensor type ([Gap] or [I-Mark]) and then run the calibration again.
Sato PW4NXHow do I calibrate the label sensor on my Sato PW4NX?First choose the sensor type suited to the media ([Gap] or [I-Mark]), then run [Auto-calibration] in [Printing] > [Advanced] > [Calibrate], with only the liner (without a label) placed over the sensor. Then check the feed with FEED.
Sato WS2How do I calibrate the sensor on my Sato WS2 after changing the roll?Quick method: with the media loaded and the cover closed, hold FEED for 3 seconds until LED 2 turns orange and LED 1 turns green, then release: calibration starts. System mode also lets you choose the transmissive or reflective sensor.
Sato WS2Why is the print incorrectly positioned on the wristbands or labels from my Sato WS2?The WS2 manual cites unsuitable media, incorrect loading, a sensor that needs calibrating or a dirty sensor. Check the media, reload it, calibrate the sensor, then clean it if the offset persists.
Sato WS4How do I calibrate the label sensor on a Sato WS4?Calibration is done without a computer, using system mode: with the printer off, hold FEED while switching it on and release when LED 1 is green and LED 2 is red (transmissive sensor) or LED 2 is orange (reflective sensor). Pressing FEED starts calibration.
Sato WS4Why is the print offset on the labels from my Sato WS4?Sato cites unsuitable or incorrectly loaded media, the wrong sensor type, an uncalibrated or dirty sensor, and a drive roller that needs replacing. Reload the media, calibrate and then clean the sensor; if nothing changes, replace the rubber roller.
Godex DT200How do I calibrate a Godex DT200 and choose the right label sensor?Send the ~S,SENSOR,0 command: according to GoDEX Europe, it starts the same auto-calibration as the calibration button. By default, the printer itself chooses between the reflective sensor and the transmissive sensor; for black mark labels, you can restrict it to the reflective sensor.
Godex DT200My Godex DT200 cannot find the gap between coloured or pre-printed labels: how do I adjust the sensor?Lower the sensor detection threshold: GoDEX Europe sets it at 40 as standard and suggests 25 or 27 for coloured or pre-printed labels, with the ~S,SENSOR,X,Y,Z command. Do this after updating the firmware and running an auto-calibration in GoDoctor.
Godex EZ6250i and EZ6350iHow do I calibrate a Godex EZ6250i or EZ6350i (label auto-detection)?Press the auto-calibration button for 2 seconds: the printer detects the labels and the ribbon. You can also switch the printer off and back on while holding FEED, or use the Analysis > Calibration menu.
Godex EZ6250i and EZ6350iWhy does my Godex EZ6250i skip labels? The label height setting does not match the media, or dust is masking the sensor. Check the height setting, clean the sensor, then run the auto-detection again.
Godex G500How do I calibrate a Godex G500 (automatic label size detection)?Switch the printer off, then switch it back on while holding the FEED button down. Release FEED when the READY light flashes red and STATUS lights up orange: the G500 measures the labels, saves their height, then prints a self-test page.
Godex G500Why does my Godex G500 skip labels or print out of position? The calibration no longer matches the media or the sensor is masked. Run the label size calibration again, then check the label height setting, the cleanliness of the sensor and the paper guides.
Godex GE300How do I calibrate a Godex GE300 so that it detects labels automatically? With the printer off, switch it back on while holding down the FEED button and release the button as soon as the light flashes red. The GE300 measures the media, stores the label height, then prints a self-test page.
Godex GE300Why does my Godex GE300 skip a label during printing? The label height setting no longer matches the media, or dust is masking the sensor. Check these two points, then run automatic detection again so that the printer re-measures the labels.
Godex HD830iHow do I calibrate a Godex HD830i?The calibration button is on the rear panel of the HD830i: one press starts automatic calibration. GoDEX Europe specifies that it is equivalent to the ~S,SENSOR,0 command, which can also be sent from GoDoctor.
Godex HD830iMy Godex HD830i cannot find the gap between labels longer than 250 mm: what should I do?The HD830i prints labels up to 1,016 mm long, but a GoDEX printer only searches for the gap or mark over 250 mm by default. Extend this range with ~S,SENSOR (GoDEX example: ~S,SENSOR,400,3,30 for 400 mm), then run calibration again with the button.
Godex RT200How do I print the label sensor diagram on a Godex RT200 using the FEED button? With media loaded and the printer switched on, open the printhead (one beep), press FEED six times (two beeps), close the printhead and run calibration: the printer prints the gap or mark sensor output diagram. GoDEX Europe recommends this for difficult media.
Godex ZX1000iHow do I calibrate a Godex ZX1200i (automatic label sensor calibration)?Press the calibration button at the rear of the printer: the ZX1200i runs an automatic calibration on the loaded media. According to GoDEX Europe, this button has the same effect as the ~S,SENSOR,0 command, which you can also send from the GoDoctor utility.
Godex ZX1000iWhy does calibration fail on my Godex ZX1200i with very long labels?By default, the printer only searches for the gap or mark over 250 mm. GoDEX Europe says to extend this distance with ~S,SENSOR (for example ~S,SENSOR,400,3,30 for 400 mm), then press the calibration button.
Godex ZX400How do I calibrate a Godex ZX420 or ZX420i (label auto-detection)?Press the calibration button at the back of the printer for 1 to 2 seconds. Alternative method: switch it off, switch it back on while holding FEED and release the button when the READY light flashes red and the STATUS light turns orange.
Godex ZX400Why do the labels on my Godex ZX420 not stop in the right place when I press FEED?The printer does not know, or no longer knows, the exact length of your labels. Check the sensor position, then run auto-detection again.
Brother TD-4How do I calibrate the label sensor (gap or black mark) on my Brother TD-4420TN?With the printer off, hold down the Feed/Pause button, switch it on and release the button when the light has flashed red 5 times. You can also calibrate from the BPM tool: Printer Function, sensor type, then Calibrate.
Brother TD-4Why does my Brother TD-4 skip labels when printing?Brother cites three causes: incorrectly set label size, unsuitable sensor sensitivity, dirty sensors. Check the size in BPM, change the detection threshold, then clean the gap and black mark sensors.
Brother TJ-4420TNHow do I calibrate the label sensor on a Brother TJ-4420TN?On the display, open the menu, then Capteur (sensor) > Auto Calibration, and choose the type of consumable. Brother recommends calibrating on a new printer, each time you change media and after an initialisation.
Brother TJ-4420TNWhy does my Brother TJ-4420TN skip a label when printing?According to Brother, the label size set is incorrect, the sensor sensitivity is incorrectly set, or the sensors are dusty. Check the width and height in BPM, clean the sensors, then calibrate again.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to recalibrate my label printer every time I change the roll?

Not for an identical roll: on the ZD410, ZD420 and ZD621, Zebra states that pressing FEED once or twice is enough with a roll of the same type, from the same supplier and the same batch. A calibration is needed when the media changes size, type, supplier or batch. Brother asks for the TJ-4420TN to be calibrated at every media change.

Why does my printer skip every other label?

On the Honeywell MP Nova and RP4, the guide first cites content placed too close to the top edge: leave about 0.5 mm of blank space at the top of the label. Then calibrate the media. If every other label is still skipped, Honeywell mentions a faulty media sensor and refers you to service.

Why doesn't my printer detect the gap between pre-printed labels?

Ink or dark pre-printed graphics can fool the sensor. Toshiba provides a manual adjustment of the detection threshold (B-852, B-EX4T1); Zebra recommends a manual calibration, with the sensor placed where it meets the least print (ZD410, ZD620). For coloured or pre-printed labels, GoDEX Europe suggests updating the firmware, calibrating, then lowering the sensor threshold from 40 to 25 or 27.
